ABERYSTWYTH Town manager Matthew Bishop is looking for a positive response from his players after a third straight league defeat saw them slip to third-from-bottom in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League last weekend.
The Seasiders were unable to build on their 2-1 midweek win at local rivals Penrhyncoch in the Nathaniel MG Cup when they slipped to a 3-0 ‘home’ defeat to Carmarthen Town at Newtown’s Latham Park on Saturday.
“We gifted Carmarthen with an own goal, and Will Bell held his hand up in the dressing room and apologised for that,” said Bishop after the match.
“We created chances and had a particularly good spell at the start of the second half. We dominated for about 20 minutes, but never really threatened from our chances.
“The only difference between the sides was they took their chances.”
After a 3-1 defeat at Rhyl and a 4-0 loss at Bangor, Bishop admitted that he was disappointed to see his side concede three more goals at Latham Park last weekend.
“I’m very disappointed and frustrated about the three goals that we gave away, and we’ve got to find a way to stem this. That’s 10 goals conceded in three games now.
“But we have got a good group of players that I believe in, and I still think that they are good enough. We are having a spell where a bit of the luck is not on our side.
“But we are also getting punished for some bad decision-making, and we’ve got to cut that out.”After playing four games in 11 days, the Aberystwyth manager said he was looking forward to be able to get the squad back together for training session this week.
“Obviously we have got a lot to work on, so we’ll get back in as a group on Wednesday,” he said. “I know the players are hurting and they want to put things right.”
After a welcome eight-day break from action, their challenging run of 10 consecutive league matches away from home continues against Gap Connah’s Quay this Sunday.
Still unbeaten, the Nomads have picked up 12 points in six games and they will be keen to keep pace with league frontrunners The New Saints.
“They’ve got threats all over, and they are solid too,” said Bishop. “They are are one of the title contenders, so it is going to be difficult, and it’s another away match.
“We have got to crack on, and see if we can get something from it.”
Aberystwyth Town had slipped to a third successive defeat in the Dafabet Welsh Premier as Carmarthen Town took the spoils at the Seasiders’ adopted home of Latham Park, Newtown last Saturday.
After defeats at Rhyl and Bangor, Aber started purposefully in their league return to mid Wales, with Luke Borrelli firing an early strike off target, before Joe Clarke tested Lee Idzi with a long range lob.
At the other end, Kieron Lewis’ corner was headed wide by ex-Aber striker Mark Jones, but they were gifted the lead when a cross was headed into his net by the unfortunate Will Bell on 12 minutes.
Carmarthen went on to dominate, with Lewis Harling bringing a great save out of Dominic Richards, and Dave Vincent also testing the keeper with a header, whilst Declan Carroll too went close.
A late rally from Aber saw Kurtis March send a shot just wide, whilst Sam Rodon headed wide from a Chris Jones corner, and Geoff Kellaway flashed a shot wide.
Rodon was also denied by a goal line clearance, but for their disciplined performance Carmarthen deserved their lead at half time.
Aber threatened again early in the second half with cross after cross fired into the Carmarthen box, but to no avail as Bell headed over from another Jones corner, as did Rodon from another set-piece.
A great save from Richards denied Carroll, another ex-Seasider, but back came Aber with Kellaway setting up Blake Davies and Borrelli also threatening the keeper.
Streetwise Carmarthen, however, killed the game 20 minutes in when striker Jones slipped in Keiran Lewis down the right side, and he finished confidently for 2-0.
Aber, playing in their new Green home kit for the first time, were really up against it now but still they kept coming with Kellaway having a shot deflected for a corner, and Davies drawing a save from Idzi.
Then came the killer blow on 71 minutes as Jones ran to the touchline and pulled the ball back for Liam Thomas to score a third goal.
Late chances for Bell and Joe Clarke could not mask a very disappointing performance by Aber.
