BONT came through as victors in the first of their double-header of Cup Finals against Talybont, as a thrilling 3-2 win saw them lift the Len and Julia Newman Trophy at Park Avenue last Wednesday.

A last-gasp winner from Lee Jones secured a dramatic win for the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League leaders, with the match heading towards extra-time.

The Tangerines, who are targeting the District treble this season, started brightly from the word go, creating several opportunities in the early minutes, including a chance for Ben Lewis after just 30 seconds.

Talybont, however, held firm at the back and they stunned Bont by taking the lead against the run of play when Robbie Soughgate’s effort was deflected into the net off the unfortunate Owen Evans.

Bont kept composure and continued to create chances, and they were rewarded when Terry Davies found space in the box and crossed to Dewi Sion Evans, who slotted the equaliser from just five yards out.

The second half was more of an even affair in terms of possession, with Talybont creating some promising chances, but Bont also created good opportunities.

It was the league leaders who made the breakthrough on the hour when Lewis latched onto another Davies cross, and with a lot to do, he scored for a 2-1 lead.

The Tangerines had chances to put the game to bed, but Talybont fought back well, and as they began to get a foothold they had a penalty appeal turned away.

With a little less than 10 minutes to go, however, Talybont grabbed a hard-earned equaliser when Dylan Hughes converted with a superb finish from a tight angle, and it was very much game on again.

Bari Southgate could have won the match when heading over the bar for Talybont as they pressed on for a winner.

The game, however, seemed to be heading towards extra-time, when there was one final twist in this exciting encounter.

Bont pushed forward and when the ball fell at the feet of Lee Jones, he fired home a left footed shot from just outside the area.

The goal brought jubilation for the Bont players and their many supporters as they lifted their first silverware for seven years.

It sets up for another thrilling encounter between these two sides in the Cambrian Tyres League Cup Final on Wednesday, 10 May, again at Park Avenue (ko 7pm).
