LUKE Borrelli scored another well-taken brace to maintain Aberystwyth’s unbeaten record on the 3G pitch at Park Avenue with a fine 3-1 win over Airbus UK Broughton on Saturday evening.
The Wingmakers had given Aber a pre-Halloween fright when Jonny Spittle equalised midway through the second half, but Borrelli’s second goal and then a Chris Jones penalty sealed the win for Matthew Bishop’s team.
The Seasiders named an unchanged side from the one that had been held to a goalless draw with Llandudno, and they looked sharp from the start.
Dan Alfei whipped an early cross into the box for Borrelli, who saw his header pushed away by keeper Ryan Neild, and the lively Aber striker also fired an effort wide from 20 yards.
Airbus, however, had a great chance to open the scoring when a nightmare pass by home keeper Chris Mullock went to Ryan Fraughan, but instead of squaring the ball, he saw his shot charged down by the Aber custodian.
Ex-Seasider Fraughan fired another effort wide from the edge of the box, but in an open game Aber responded when Kurtis March went down in the box, but the referee was unimpressed.
Alfei then whipped in another cross, which Borrelli headed wide, and this time Aber had legitimate claims for a penalty, with the striker held back.
Tony Gray saw an effort curl around the post from the edge of the box, and Ryan Edwards also fired wide from distance as the visitors stepped up.
The nervous-looking Mullock then carelessly threw the ball out to Airbus’ Jamie Menagh, who curled the ball over the top corner of the goal.
It was the Seasiders, however, who broke the deadlock against the run of play on 35 minutes. Great work from Geoff Kellaway took the ball wide left to Chris Jones, who whipped in a great pass to the dangerous Borrelli.
The target man timed his run superbly to get in behind the defence and he volleyed in from four yards.
It took some timely interventions from superb centre half Ryan Woollacott to keep Aber in front at the interval, but a bright start to the second half from Aber saw Kellaway create an opening for Joe Clarke, who fired over the bar from the edge of the box.
Jones then came agonisingly close when he stepped inside Fraughan and saw his fierce strike crash against the crossbar and rebound back out.
Borrelli also picked out Kellaway in the penalty box, and the stalwart fired a great chance wide - but then Aberystwyth were quickly punished.
Spittle was given the space inside the six yard box to power home his header from Jamie Menagh’s corner for the Airbus leveller on 57 minutes.
It was the first goal Aber had conceded in over four hours of football.
Mullock made a superb save to deny Gray clean through, after a long ball over the top, and when the ball was headed back in from the corner, Gray got in behind the keeper, but failed to capitalise from a tight angle.
The points were there for the taking at either end, and it was a mistake by the Airbus keeper that turned the game in Aber’s favour on 75 minutes.
A safe-looking back pass was totally missed by Neild, and Borrelli was there to accept the gift and smash in his second goal from a difficult angle.
It got even better for Aber on 79 minutes when a late challenge from Spittle brought down the lively Jones as he broke into the box from the left, and the Airbus defender was booked for the foul, and sent-off for dissent.
Jones stepped up to smash the penalty into the bottom left corner for 3-1.
It also took great low save to deny Kellaway, and Sherbon headed just over from a Jones free kick on the left.
With Clarke, Sherbon and March all putting in good shifts in midfield, the three points were safely in the bag.
