MIKE Straw netted a hat-trick as Borth United made progress into the second qualifying round of the JD Welsh Cup with a 6-2 home win over Mid Wales League division two rivals Machynlleth.

Borth took five minutes to open their account as a slide rule pass from midfield allowed Straw to find the net with a low drive, and further pressure was rewarded as Dion Ellis-Clark doubled the lead on 20 minutes with a close range finish.

Mach immediately halved the deficit when Adam Walters, deputising in goal for Ben Willis, could only deflect the ball into the path of Harry Cottam to score.

Borth, restored their two goal lead when Dion Ellis-Clark’s free kick into the box gave Clive Morgan the opportunity to head home, but Paul Jones pulled another goal back for the visitors with only minutes of the opening half remaining.

With only a minute played into the second half Mike Straw was upended in the penalty area, and James Davies scored from the spot, and late on the hard-working Straw rounded the keeper to score.

Straw then completed his hat-trick when he met Dion Ellis-Clark’s cross with a near post header to seal a strong all-round performance from the hosts.

Penparcau showed their credentials as they beat Mid Wales League division one outfit Tywyn/Bryncrug 2-1 at home, with new signing Ryan Edwards from Llanilar scoring for the home side on his debut.

Lee Jones gave the division two side a great start by opening the scoring in the first minute, and Edwards showed great footwork on edge of the box to fire into the bottom corner to double the lead.

James Morgan provided the assist for Ben Richards to halve the deficit, but Arky held firm to put their names in the hat for the draw for the next round.

It was a disappointing day for Bow Street as they crashed out with a 2-1 extra time defeat at Rhayader, with goals from Joe Wozencraft and Taylor Wozencraft cancelling out Garmon Nutting’s goal.

Cai Johnson scored twice as Dolgellau notched a 4-1 win at Kerry, with Owain Williams and Jamie Jones also netting. Veteran striker Carl Danson stepped off the bench to grab a goal for the Lambs.

Tom Evans scored two first half goals as Montomery Town beat Hay St Mary’s 3-1, with Scott Williams also netting with a great strike, after Jack Biggs had replied for the Saints from the penalty spot.

Barmouth and Dyffryn United youngster Andrew Papirnyk kept his cool to convert a late penalty in a 1-0 win at Abermule, whilst goals from Ben Thompson and Harry Davies earned Four Crosses a 2-0 win away against Llansantffraid

Andrew Gwilt fired a hat-trick as Waterloo Rovers won 6-1 at Churchstoke, with Scott Holley, Luke Evans and Tom Ellis also scoring for the Welshpool side.
