BORTH United avenged their defeat at Abermule seven days earlier in the MMP Mid Wales League division two with a 4-2 win in the home return last weekend.
On a cloudy afternoon at Uppingham Fields, the match got off to a sensational start as the ever-alert Nick Mumby gave the visitors the lead with a low shot into the bottom corner after just two minutes.
Borth responded immediately, however, as within a minute Guto Huws had cut in from the left wing and he slotted home with a cool finish at the near post.
The hosts made the most of the wind on their backs as Sam Chapman broke free of the defence and scored with a rasping drive, and a minute later Chapman scored again in similar fashion to give Borth a commanding 3-1 lead at half time.
Abermule, with the advantage of a stiff breeze, held the upper hand as the second half progressed, and the visitors created some good goalscoring chances.
Borth’s defence worked hard to safeguard Ben Willis’ goal, but Mule did reduce the deficit on 70 minutes, with Ricky Davies firing home with a deft finish.
As Mule searched for a late equaliser, they were left open to the counter-attack and in the last minute Zak Douglas cut in from the right wing and fed a through ball for Ryan Davies to slide the ball beyond the keeper to guarantee the points.
Aberystwyth University were unable to stop Montgomery Town from claiming the MMP Mid Wales League division two title as the league leaders notched their 14th successive victory with a 3-0 win.
Goals from Tom Evans, with a brace, and Scott Williams opened an unassailable 14 point lead at the top of the table.
Charlie Proctor’s goal was not enough for third-placed Waterloo Rovers as they went down 2-1 at Dyffryn Banw, after goals by Harri Evans and Bran Griffiths, whilst second-placed Hay St Mary’s saw their match against Dolgellau postponed, as was Machynlleth’s against Rhayader.
In midweek, Machynlleth had been hammered 9-0 at home by Four Crosses.
Gareth Jones led the way in a one-sided encounter with four goals, whilst Ben Simms netted a hat-trick, and Harry Davies and Shin Miah also found the net.
In the only match to go ahead in division one last weekend, Tom Allen-Davies scored twice as Tywyn/Bryncrug won 4-0 away at Llansantffraid Village, with Aled Jones and Cullen Rodgers also scoring.
Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League
LLYR Davies scored four goals as Tregaron Turfs took their number of wins into double figures in the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League division one with an emphatic 9-0 home win over Padarn United.
Rhun Garner weighed in with a hat-trick and Arwel Jones and William Williams also got on the scoresheet to complete a dominant win for the Turfs.
Llanilar meanwhile lifted themselves up to second place in the division one table with a 4-2 away win at Bont.
Goals by Ryan Edwards, Guto Roberts, Morgan Roberts-Young and an own goal secured the win, which saw Llanilar move two points clear of their hosts, who scored their goals through Trevor Jenkins and Llion Jones.
League leaders Penparcau, who were involved in cup action last weekend, are eight points clear at the top, with just three league matches remaining.
Sion James and Jonathan Evans both scored hat-tricks and Dan Owens netted one as a strong Penrhyncoch Reserves celebrated their third league win of the season with a solid 7-2 win over Aberystwyth University Reserves.
Meanwhile the scheduled division one match between Talybont and Machynlleth Reserves was postponed.
