ABERYSTWYTH University had an early exit in the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup as they went down 3-2 in their second round tie at home against Borth United last weekend.
The overnight and morning rain made the Vicarage Field pitch heavy going, but Borth made a flying start as Ryan Edwards cut in from the left wing and curved a superb right-footed shot beyond University keeper Adam Walters for the first goal.
Minutes later Edwards again crossed from the left wing for Daniel Hopton to score the second goal with a deft header .
The University’s response was immediate, as Liam Powell scored with a low shot passed keeper Alex Pennock, and as they kept up the pressure Dylan Rhys Price got an equaliser with a low deflected drive.
Borth’s goal led a charmed life as the students pushed on, but they somehow failed to score through a melee of players, before the two sides went in 2-2 at half time.
As the pitch condition deteriorated, either side could have won it, but 10 minutes in Borth made the breakthrough.
Lee Jones passed the ball into the penalty box, and as the defenders hesitated the alert Ryan Davies ran through to score.
The students attacked in numbers to try and force extra time, but Borth held out.
