CARNO progressed into the last eight of the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup by beating Borth United 2-1 at Latham Park, but their win was marred by a serious injury sustained by influential player Gregg Brown.

Just before half-time, Brown went down with a serious injury to his knee after turning sharply on the 3G pitch, and play was held up for a full 90 minutes whilst waiting for an ambulance.

Borth’s Ben Jones had cancelled a fine opening goal by Brown, but division one outfit Carno prevailed in the second half, courtesy of a second half strike from the prolific Peter Rees.

As Carno’s pitch was deemed to be unplayable the match was switched to the 3G surface at Latham Park in Newtown, with an evening kick-off.

In a tight opening period, Brown had Carno’s best chance after being put through by Richie Evans, but his good shot went just wide of the post.

Peter Rees was denied a penalty after Borth keeper Sean Gates appeared to have pulled him down inside the box, with the referee waving play on.

Borth battled well, but they were restricted to long range efforts, with Ben Jones and Liam Lewis getting shots away, whilst Carno keeper Kris Williams was equal to those on target.

Just after the half hour mark, however, Brown fired the ball into the top corner of the net from 25 yards out, after being teed up by Richie Evans.

Borth responded well and were back on level terms when Ryan Davies’ pin-point pass through the Carno defence led to Ben Jones sliding the ball passed the keeper on 40 minutes.

Then, just before the interval, Brown unfortunately sustained a nasty injury to his knee, and it was an hour and a half before the tie could continue.

Once play had finally restarted, Carno took the initiative and controlled the game, with defender Daniel Lewis replacing Brown, to make his first appearance for Carno in five months.

Ger Jones finished off a well worked goal from close range inside the first five minutes of the second half, but despite the ball being cut back to him the goal was ruled out for offside.

Peter Rees, however, put Carno in front moments later when cutting in from the left side and firing the ball home for his 25th goal of the season.

Richie Evans, Ashley Owen and Andrew Evans also had chances to extend the lead in the second half, but Carno saw out the game to progress into the last eight of the competition.

Llanrhaeadr progressed to the next round after a thrilling a penalty shoot-out victory against Churchstoke, after they finished 5-5 after extra time.

Further goals from an own goal and Tom Evans took the game to penalties, whilst Churchstoke had netted through two goals from Joe Haycock and single goals by Trevor Dunham, Andrew Green and Kieran Harris.

Llanrhaeadr prevailed 5-4 in the shoot-out after successful spot kicks from Iain Edmunds, Endaf Owens, Tom Coulson, Ben White and the winning penalty kick from Dan Kelly.

Aberaeron marched on into the quarter-finals as goals from David Evans and Mattie Davies earned them a solid 2-0 win at Montgomery Town.
