BORTH United kick-started their new campaign in the Spar Mid Wales League division one as they registered an impressive 3-1 win over local rivals Bow Street, in front of another large crowd at Uppingham Fields on Tuesday.
The visitors had arrived on a high after a fine win at Berriew on the opening weekend of the season, but newly-promoted Borth made the perfect response to their defeat to Welshpool.
There were half chances at both ends, and Ryan Edwards nearly gave the hosts the lead with a volley on the turn, only for it to be palmed for a corner by keeper Ben Willis.
Borth forced a series of corners and young striker Edwards wasn’t going to be denied on the half hour when his shot from fully 35 yards flew past keeper Willis into the back of the net.
Despite both teams playing an open game throughout the first half, and creating chances, Borth fully deserved their 1-0 interval lead.
The Magpies upped their game as the second half got underway, but Borth’s defence held firm and the hosts doubled the lead on the hour.
A superb left-footed shot from Lee Jones out on the left wing nestled into the top corner, for an early contender for goal of the season.
Within minutes it was 3-0 as Jac Wyn Williams was brought down in the penalty area, and captain James Davies slotted home from the spot.
Bow Street, to their credit, attacked in numbers in the last quarter of an hour of the match and they were rewarded for their efforts by a penalty kick scored by Tom Williams, but Borth on balance of play deserved their win on the night.
Knighton went down 3-2 at home to Welshpool Town under the new Bryn y Castell floodlights, where a Will Thomas brace and a late Dan Bowen volley earned their second win.
In a fiercely contested match, a superb volley from Thomas saw them take an early lead, but Knighton made a spell of pressure tell with a super strike from Connor Bird before the break.
Thomas restored Pool’s lead slightly against the run of play in the second half, but Knighton, urged on by a crowd of 121, hit back again when Bird rifled home his fourth goal in two games after a goalmouth scramble was half cleared
The Robins went all out for victory, but then in injury time Bowen smashed the winner, to sentence Knighton to a second successive defeat.
Meanwhile two late Berriew goals from Matt Mumford denied Llanfair United all three points as they were pegged back to a 2-2 draw in their first home fixture of the season.
Llanfair had opened the scoring just before half time when new young signing Llyr Griffiths lobbed former Llanfair keeper David Jones from a very tight angle, just off the touchline.
In the second half, early pressure saw Josh Astley close down a defensive error between David Jones and another former Llanfair player, Marc Jones and placed the ball into the empty net.
With 10 minutes to go, however, Mumford carried the ball into Llanfair’s half and rifled home a 30 yard strike, and minutes later Mumford equalised from a 20 yard free kick, which deflected off the wall into the bottom corner.
Meanwhile Llanrhaeadr continued their good start with a 2-0 win against Carno, denying them their first league points of the season with goals from Khyam Wyton and Gus Harris.
In a tight first half, Carno’s Peter Rees saw a lobbed effort cleared away, and Scott Williams headed into the side netting from a free kick.
Rees and had Carno’s best chances in the second half, but Llanrhaeadr took their chances to secure their second win from as many games.
Tywyn/Bryncrug also made it two wins from two as they beat local rivals Machynlleth 3-1, courtesy of goals from Mark Edmondson and Andy Jones, with his second brace in a week. Harry Cottam was on target for Machynlleth.
Max McLaughlin earned Kerry a point as his equaliser secured a 1-1 draw at Dolforgan Park against Radnor Valley, who had broken the deadlock in the second half through Joey Price.
Llanidloes also notched their second win with a 5-2 triumph away at Llandrindod Wells on Wednesday night, with goals from Rhys Evans, with a brace, Ashley Owen, skipper Steve Jones, from the penalty spot, and Richie Evans. Kieran Mccarley and Stuart Williams replied.
