BORTH United moved to within a point of the Spar Mid Wales League division two leaders as they registered a battling 1-0 win over visitors Four Crosses at a breezy Uppingham Fields last weekend.
A Liam Lewis headed goal earned a quick-fire double for Borth, having beaten Crosses 2-1 the previous week, and they are just one point adrift of frontrunners Builth Wells, with two games in hand.
Looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, Borth made a positive start, but the windy conditions made it difficult for them to keep the ball under control.
Midway through the half, Borth’s Liam Lewis appeared to be onside, but was denied the opening goal by a linesman’s flag and the score remained 0-0 at half time.
With the wind in their favour as the second half got underway, Borth made some telling runs, especially down both wings, with some good crosses to the forwards.
Four Crosses also threatened on the counter-attack, but any danger was competently dealt with by a resolute defence.
Borth made the breakthrough 15 minutes into the half, when a quick ball from defence found Ben Jones on the right wing, and his pin-point cross was met majestically by Liam Lewis at the far post.
Chances came and went for both teams, but Borth held out for a valuable 1-0 win and they remain unbeaten this season.
Dolgellau are also joint second after goals from Dominic Thomas and David Edwards secured a 2-0 win over Penybont, who are still seeking their first win.
It had looked comfortable for the hosts when, after just three minutes, a throw down the right wing by Aron Parry ended at the feet of Jasper Jones, and he clipped the ball down the line for Thomas to cut in and fire a low shot and hard into the net.
Further chances saw Thomas head over from an Edwards cross, whilst Harri Davies and Nathan Thomas also cleared the crossbar, and Thomas again shot over.
On 41 minutes, however, Tom Carr won the ball in midfield and played it on to Jones, and from his cross Edwards finished well to make it 2-0 at the interval.
Dolgellau could have increased their lead in the second half, with Edwards sending Dominic Thomas clear, but from a tight angle his effort hit the near post.
Thomas and Edwards both forced saves in the latter stages as Penybont held out.
Leaders Builth Wells slipped to their third league defeat of the season with a 4-0 defeat at home to Kerry, who also joined Borth and Dolgellau on 14 points.
Goals from Luke Vickers and Luke Mumford put the visitors on track for victory, before a brace from Daryl McWatt sealed an excellent win for the Lambs.
A Mathew Knight goal earned Llansantffraid a 1-1 draw with Abermule, and two goals from Aidan Oakley earned Churchstoke a 2-0 success over Dyffryn Banw.
