BORTH United were unable to halt the charge of current MMP Mid Wales League division two table toppers Montgomery Town as they slipped to a solid 5-1 home defeat at Uppingham Fields last weekend.
The visitors had arrived on the back of eight consecutive wins, yet Borth created some good chances as the opening half got underway, with Mike Straw, Guto Huws and Dion Ellis-Clark all going close.
Borth keeper Hefin Hopkins made a point blank save from Rob Hartshon - but the visitors took the lead soon after when a cross from the right found Jack Williams, who scored with a low shot at the far post.
The hosts were unlucky not to equalise when Bryn Oliver’s cross was met by Mike Straw, who saw his glancing header finger-tipped on to the post by the keeper.
The visitors, however, increased the lead when Rob Hartshon weaved his way into the box, and his low shot beat Hopkins.
Almost immediately, Borth were awarded a penalty for handball, and James Davies scored from the spot, but Montgomery held a slender 2-1 lead at the interval.
Borth came out in determined mood as the second half got underway, but the visitors restored their two goal lead when a left wing cross allowed the prolific Tom Evans to head the ball passed Hopkins.
The visitors made their second half authority count as the hard working Rob Hartshon scored with a cool finish, and Charlie Jellett then completed the scoring with a superb free kick for a well deserved win, to leave Montgomery in good heart of the reverse fixture this Saturday.
Charlie Owen scored a hat-trick as Dolgellau took the derby spoils in division two with a 5-1 home win over Machynlleth. Owain Williams and David Edwards also netted for the hosts, whilst Benj Davies scored the Machynlleth consolation.
Waterloo Rovers hit back from being two goals down at half-time to win 3-2 away at Rhayader Town, courtesy of goals from Nathan James, Luke Evans and an own goal - after Jamie Evans and Mike Fowlie had put the hosts in control at the interval.
Jack Biggs scored twice and Adi Lawford once as Hay St Mary’s drew 3-3 at Presteigne, who replied through Tom Lewis Tom Crichton and Neil Walmsley.
Newbridge won 3-2 away at Abermule, courtesy of goals from Jake Bufton, Dave Thomas and Ollie Woods. Adam Williams and Tommy Jones scored for Mule.
FAW TROPHY ROUND-UP
BOW STREET’s hopes of reaching the last eight of the FAW Trophy ended with a 3-0 defeat at Cefn Albion, on a day when the Welsh National (Wrexham Area) League completed a double over MMP Mid Wales League opposition.
The Magpies had notched away wins at Llandrindod Wells, Churchstoke and Maltsters Sports en route to the last 16, but a slow start proved to be costly at Cefn.
All the home goals came in the first-half as Jimmy Jones, Conner Kendrick and 17-year-old Zac Davies found the net for the hosts.
Bow Street did their best to get a foothold in the contest, but Cefn held firm to progress to the last eight.
Albion’s joint manager Sean Jones said: “We broke the deadlock after just six minutes of play, and from there we never looked back.
“The visitors had us second best after the interval and it was all Bow Street, but with resolute defending we saw the game out.”
Berriew’s run meanwhile ended at Plas Madoc, who bagged a dramatic late winner through Nicky Williams’ last minute free-kick.
Joe Haycock had given Berriew an early lead, but that was cancelled out by a header from Jamie Williams, before Nicky Williams won and converted a penalty after the interval.
Rhys Stephens levelled for Berriew, but Nicky Williams snatched victory with his impressive set-piece.
Four Crosses also bowed out of the competition with a 2-1 defeat at Welsh Alliance side Bodedern Athletic, who took charge with goals from Hayden Clarke and Shaun Jenkins, before Ben Finn replied late on.
Corwen came from behind to cruise to a 6-1 victory over Pwllheli. Gareth Jones gave Pwllheli the lead, but Joe Williams missed a penalty, and a hat-trick from Dale Davies and goals from Ryan Billington, Sam Henry and Williams secured Corwen’s victory.
Llangefni meanwhile won 4-0 at Llanrug, courtesy of goals from Craig Roberts, Kevin Lloyd, Iwan Jones and Allan Mark Owen.
