BORTH United have closed the gap on leaders Kerry to three points at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League division two, courtesy of a thrilling 5-4 win at Builth Wells last weekend.
In a real thriller at Lant Field, Builth had battled back from being 4-1 down to level matters, only for the visitors to dramatically claim victory with an injury time winner from Jay Walker.
An action-packed start had seen Liam Lewis lob the ball over the keeper to give Borth the lead in the sixth minute, only for Dave Thomas to equalise for Builth two minutes later.
It took a fine save from the Builth keeper to deny Lewis his second goal, but Borth’s Liam Berner then scored the goal of the match with a rasping shot from fully 30 yards to lead 2-1.
Within three minutes Ben Jones extended Borth’s lead with a cool finish, and the goals kept coming, with Ryan Davies scoring from the penalty spot.
Builth were also awarded a penalty kick in the final minutes of the half, and Dave Thomas scored from the spot to make it 2-4 at the interval.
The goal just before the break gave the home side the impetus for an all-out attack as the second half progressed and Dave Thomas completed his well-deserved hat-trick to bring the hosts right back into the match.
Borth had a golden chance to extend their lead, but Liam Lewis saw a penalty saved, and the hosts then completed a fine comeback when Gethin Jarman superb finish for the equaliser.
Builth looked to have earned a draw as the match went into injury time, but then Ben Jones’s free kick into the penalty area enabled Jay Walker to lob the keeper for Borth’s winning goal.
Two headed goals by Ali Palmer, and a long range free kick by Henry Nicholson, saw Aberystwyth University overturn a two-goal deficit to run out 3-2 winners at Four Crosses in the Spar Mid Wales League division two.
Buoyed by back-to-back wins the previous weekend, the students were soon on the front foot in a blustery affair, but several good chances went to waste before goals each side of the interval from Josh Biggs and Jake Edwards saw Crosses take a 2-0 lead.
The University, however, showed great character as they turned the game around in the final half hour.
Palmer pulled one back with a header from a Matthew Hunton cross, before another cross by left back Hunton was headed on by Shaun Roberts, and Palmer headed home his second goal.
With the chances coming, Nicholson fired the winner with 10 minutes remaining, courtesy of a terrific 40-yard free kick, to lift the Uni up to sixth in the table with two league games left.
Frontrunners Kerry were looking back over their shoulders as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Churchstoke, with Max Mclaughlin’s winning goal.
Kerry’s top scorer Matt Mumford had crucially seen his penalty saved by Churchstoke keeper Nick Lewis.
Two goals from Nathan Prodger earned Llansantffraid Village a 2-0 win over Presteigne, whilst goals from Lyndon Jones and Aled Jones earned Newbridge a 2-2 draw with Dyffryn Banw, who scored through Geraint Roberts and Tom Foulkes
DIVISION ONE
TYWYN/BRYNCRUG dropped into a bottom-two position in the Spar Mid Wales League division as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Welshpool, with the Lilywhites leapfrogging above them.
A brace for Josh Morgan and a header from Sam Evans earned the home side three important points as they registered their fourth league win, despite Nick Williams and Mark Edmonson finding the net for the visitors.
Llanidloes Town enjoyed a profitable away day to move up to seventh place with 3-0 victory at Hay St Mary’s.
After winning 2-0 at Knighton the week before, the Daffs continue to blossom as two goals from Harri Clarke and one from substitute Josh Matthews secured a deserved victory.
Rhys Evans and Joe Evans both had chances, before the breakthrough that they had threatened came right on half time when Harri Clarke headed home from a Matthew Savage corner kick.
The same two players again combined for Clarke to head his second goal after the interval, before sub Josh Matthews completed the scoring.
Elsewhere defences dominated as Aberaeron held onto their top five position, courtesy of a goalless draw away against Llandrindod Wells.
SPAR MID WALES LEAGUE CUP
BOW STREET missed out on a place in the last four of the Spar Mid Wales Cup as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Berriew in their quarter-final match.
Tom Evans netted for the Magpies, but goals by Rhys Stephens, Rich Davies and Rob Pritchard set up a semi-final match against Dolgellau or Carno.
A Ryan Broadbent brace, Iwan Matthews and a Dale Evans free kick saw Llanrhaeadr beat Radnor Valley 3-2, to set up a semi-final tie against either Rhayader or Llandrindod Wells. Callum Matthews hit a brace for Radnor.
