RYAN Davies scored a superb long range lobbed effort as Borth United marched on into the second qualifying round of the JD Welsh Cup with a battling 2-0 win over Presteigne at Uppingham Fields.

Guto Huws scored their second goal late on, as the Crows saw off their MMP Mid Wales division two rivals.

Both teams had chances as the opening half progressed, but generally defences held the upper hand, to the extent that neither keeper was put under undue pressure before the break.

Soon after the kick-off for the second half, however, the ball was played back to Ryan Davies, who showed great vision to chip the keeper from deep in his own half.

Clive Morgan saw his low drive superbly palmed away for a corner by the visiting keeper, but then Presteigne attacked in numbers in search an equaliser.

A resolute home defence were alert to any danger to Ben Willis’ goal, and as the match went into it’s final minutes Borth sealed their win.

Justin Quinn made inroads into the Presteigne defence, and he squared the ball into the path of Guto Huws, whose low shot evaded the goalkeeper for their crucial second goal.

Dave Edwards scored twice as Dolgellau marched into the next round with a 5-2 win over Churchstoke. Jon Sutton, Aron Burrough, Kieran Jones also netted, after goals from Kieran Mulloch and Lee Grady had fired the Stoke into a 2-0 lead.

Machynlleth meanwhile avenged their 4-0 midweek defeat against Montgomery a with a 3-2 away win over Monty in the JD Welsh Cup.

Drew Page impressed with a brace, and Sion Jones scored a penalty, whilst Tom Evans netted the replies.

Jack Weaver scored an 88th minute winner as Abermule hit back from being two goals down to defeat Rhayader Town 3-2, after Warren Sherwood and Weaver had cancelled out goals from Taylor Wozencraft and Jamie Evans for Rhayader.

Elsewhere, Jake Edwards and Simon Griffiths both scored twice for Four Crosses, with Jordan Gerrard also converting a penalty kick in their 5-0 win over Waterloo Rovers.

A Tom Bethell brace and a Mark Jones goal earned Builth Wells a 3-1 win at Llansantffraid, who levelled at one stage through Baile Austin.
