BORTH United have been handed a home tie against Welshpool Town in the second qualifying round of the Welsh Cup, after twice hitting back from being a goal down to claim a hard fought 3-2 win at Presteigne St Andrews last weekend.
Manager Ian Lewis had to re-juggle his team after losing Ryan Davies to Bow Street in midweek, and Presteigne capitalised on a nervy start by taking a deserved lead on 35 minutes.
A mistake by captain Sam Middleton had let in Matt Strangwood to open the scoring, but Lewis made some tactical changes at half time and Borth looked much better.
Just three minutes after the restart, Liam Lewis drove the ball into the bottom corner to equalise, but then against the run of play Presteigne broke through the Borth defence, and although the initial danger was cleared Strangwood turned Lee Crumpler in the box to fire the ball home.
Presteigne, urged on by caretaker boss Tom Ammonds, had chances to extend their lead, but Borth didn’t let their heads drop and after they had introduced two subs, Lewis again broke through the defence for his second equalising goal on 83 minutes. Then, with the game looking like it was going to extra time, Ben Byrne controlled the ball on the edge of the box and turned his marker to hit a thunderbolt into the top corner for the winner on 88 minutes.
James Davies also deserved special mention for his man of the match performance and full credit to all of the Borth players for showing their never-say-die attitude.
The draw for the second qualifying round of the JD Welsh Cup was made at the FAW Offices in Cardiff on Tuesday. The Central Wales ties, be played on Saturday, 10 September, are as follows:Aberaeron v Montgomery Town; Abermule v Llanuwchllyn; Borth United v Welshpool Town; Bow Street v Brecon Corries; Carno v Knighton Town; Hay St Marys v Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant; Llanidloes Town v Berriew; Newbridge on Wye v Llandrindod Wells; Rhayader v Machynlleth.
