BORTH United overturned a half-time deficit to beat local rivals Aberystwyth University 2-1 in the only game to go ahead in the MMP Mid Wales League division two last weekend, as the wet weather wiped out almost every fixture.

Second half goals by Jay Walker and James Davies sealed the three points for the seventh-placed Crows, to leave them in good heart for their trip to face second-from-bottom Presteigne this weekend.

Due to the wet condition of Uppingham Fields, Borth had switched their match to Aberystwyth Town’s 3G pitch at Park Avenue, and it was the students who created the best of the early chances.

They deservedly took a 10th minute lead as a University player was brought down inside the box, and Jon Ackroyd made no mistake from the penalty spot.

The students were unlucky not to extend their lead midway through the half as Luc Thomas’s towering header rebounded to safety off the post, but Borth also had chances as the half progressed.

The Uni held out for a slender lead at the interval, and the second half resumed with both teams attacking, and both keepers had to be alert to the danger.

Borth’s persistence was rewarded on 70 minutes as some confusion in the Uni defence allowed Jay Walker to steer the ball into an empty net to level the scores.

Within five minutes James Davies capped a remarkable Borth comeback with a superb shot into the bottom corner of the net - and despite a late Uni charge, Borth saw the game out. Aberystwyth University bounced back from the weekend defeat with a 3-2 win over Rhayader Town at Aberystwyth Town’s Park Avenue on Monday night.Early goals from Pablo De Torres and Leo Kelly had put the Aber students in control under the lights in the opening 20 minutes, but Rhayader hit back with an emphatic strike from Tony Davies before the break - and top scorer Jamie Evans equalised for the visitors on the hour. The students quickly regained the lead, however, when a quick counter-attack saw Cormac O’Byrne round the keeper to score his first goal for the senior team, and the students held out for the three points with a gritty display through the team. The only match to go ahead in division one last weekend saw Llandrindod Wells consolidate their top three position, as two first half goals earned them a 2-1 win over Carno.

A superb solo goal from Jack Evans and a header from Tom Evans put the hosts in control at half-time, but Steffan Evans pulled a goal back for Carno in difficult conditions with his first goal for the club.Meanwhile the draw for the MMP Mid Wales League Cup Quarter Finals will see Aberaeron or Bow Street travel to face Caersws, whilst Berriew will have home advantage against Montgomery Town, Builth Wells will host Four Crosses, and Llanidloes Town will entertain Kerry.
