BOW STREET made history as they beat Welshpool Town in a seven-goal thriller to win the Spar Mid Wales League Cup for the first time in an enthralling final at a sun-drenched Carno last Saturday.
After losing out in four previous finals, the Magpies were finally able to celebrate the biggest honour in their history as goals by Llion Jenkins, an own goal, Tom Williams and Ifan Burrell sealed victory.
“As far as today’s game is concerned, we should have sealed the result in the first half, but we allowed Welshpool back into it,” said manager Barry Williams.
“Ifan’s goal at the end brought relief and joy. I’m delighted for all involved at the club, and I can’t compliment the players enough for their efforts this season.
“The 18 players in the first team squad have a fantastic spirit of togetherness, which I hope will hold us in good stead for future seasons. I also want to place on record my sincere thanks to my managerial mates Rich Lucas and Dylan James for their efforts.”
It had not started well as Welshpool, who were league runners-up to champions Llanrhaeadr, took the lead through Adam Davies’ header on three minutes.
This stirred the Magpies, who had finished fifth in the table, and after some good pressure, Llion Jenkins equalised. Welshpool then slipped behind when they conceded an own goal, and Bow Street took charge with a magnificent left-footed strike by Tom Williams to make it 3-1.
It was all Bow Street at this stage and the Welshpool keeper made three sensational saves to keep his side in the game. On the stroke of half time, however, out of the blue, Welshpool managed to get a goal back through Ricky Litchfield.
Bow Street still had more possession and posed the greater threat in the second half, but Welshpool managed to equalise 20 minutes in through Adam Davies.
The match was in the balance, but with five minutes to go, Ifan Burrell finished superbly to spark joyous scenes amongst the Magpies, and their huge following.
Indeed, there was a rapturous reception as Bow Street’s captain Garmon Nutting lifted the coveted Spar Mid Wales League Cup aloft.
“We have waited a very long time for this cup, it’s like the Holy Grail,” said Bow Street chairman Wyn Lewis. “After the heartache of the four lost finals, this is so sweet. I congratulate the management and the players, whose commitment to the club is phenomenal.
“I would also like to thank our magnificent supporters who turned out in huge numbers. It has been a momentous week, with the Reserves winning the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League and the Len and Julia Newman Cup.
“Congratulations also go to Rhodri Jones and Leighton Reynolds, the management team and the players of the Reserves on a phenomenal season for them.
“Bow Street is a very happy football club, and long may that continue.”
