AFTER their fine win over MMP Mid Wales League Cup holders Bow Street in the previous round, Borth United faced another tough tie against division one leaders Caersws at a rainy Uppingham Fields - and they took the Bluebirds to extra time, before bowing out on penalties.
Tom Richards gave Caersws a 69th minute lead, only for James Davies to net a stoppage time equaliser, but Bluebirds’ keeper Luke Evans emerged as the hero as he made three saves in the shoot-out.
Borth restricted the visitors’ lively attack to half chances in a goalless first half, but the hosts could have taken the lead on the hour when Dion Ellis-Clark’s snap shot was turned away for a corner by Evans.
From the resulting corner, Sam Chapman’s header was brilliantly saved by Evans, but it was Caersws who made the breakthrough as Tom Richards’ cross from the left deceived keeper Paul Loveridge and ended in the back of the net.
Borth attacked in numbers and their perseverance finally paid dividends when a cross from the right wing allowed James Davies to slide the ball passed the keeper to take the tie into extra-time.
In cagey additional half an hour, Dion Ellis-Clark saw his shot tipped onto the crossbar, and Guto Huws’ long range shot was well saved by keeper Evans, but it seemed inevitable that penalty kicks would eventually decide the outcome.
Borth saw three spot kicks saved, whilst Elliot Jones, Rhydian Davies and Phil Jones held their nerve to slot home to send Caersws through to a quarter-final showdown with local rivals Llanidloes.
Llanidloes Town booked their place in the quarter-finals by overcoming plucky Hay St Mary’s 4-2 at Victoria Avenue.
The Daffs were in front after just five minutes with Gareth Owen heading in after a corner had been flicked on, but Adi Lawford levelled when he slotted into an empty net, after a mix-up between keeper Kris Williams and Drew Reynolds.
Llanidloes, however, took charge with two goals before half time, with George Clarke firing in a rebound after Owen’s shot had been blocked, before Bird headed in Owen’s cross to make the score 3-1.
The Daffs went close to increasing their advantage after the break, only to be denied by keeper Tom Bevan, who pulled off two terrific saves, before Peter Rees made it 4-1 when lobbing the keeper.
Hay kept battling hard and pulled one back when Biggs headed in a Will Goodwin cross, but the Daffs held on to win.
Gareth Severs scored a hat-trick as Aberaeron eased through to the last eight with a 6-0 win at Dolgellau, with Ianto ap Dafydd, James Hemming and Daf Roberts also scoring for the visiting team.
Manager Jason Jones, playing his first game in five years, provided three assists, as Aberaeron set up a quarter-final tie at home against Builth Wells
Welshpool marched on with a 4-0 win at Abermule, with goals from Will Thomas, Ed Baker, Ian Probert and Ricky Lichfield, and they face Berriew in the last eight
Goals from Richie Evans, Andy Evans and an extra-time winner from skipper Dan Lewis earned Carno a 3-2 win against Llandrindod, who had scored through Ryan Simms and Michael Collister.
Lee Jones, Alec Jones and Jack Williams scored as Montgomery Town hit back twice to win 3-2 at Llanfair United, who had scored through an own goal and Josh Astley, whilst a Will Cleaton brace and a Luke Hicks strike earned Builth Wells a 3-0 win against Llansantffraid Village. The MMP Mid Wales League Quarter-Final draw is: Caersws v Llanidloes; Berriew v Welshpool; Aberaeron v Builth Wells and Montgomery v Carno.
