CARNO secured runners-up position in the Spar Mid Wales League division one behind champions Rhayader Town when they registered a 3-0 win at home against Tywyn/Bryncrug on Wednesday night.
Needing two points from their last two matches to climb above Berriew, Carno ensured that their push for second place would not come down to their last league game at home to champions Rhayader.
Manager Chris Davies recalled Harry Holt, Steve Jones, Danny Pierce and Luke Holt to the side that had seen their title challenge end with a 1-1 draw against Llandrindod Wells four days earlier.
That result had ultimately handed Rhayader the title, despite the Red Kites losing at home to Berriew, but Carno were eager to bounce back against Tywyn.
Jordan Jones saw an effort turned onto the post in what was Carno’s best early chance, before Drew Reynolds headed the crucial opening goal for the Greens from a Richie Evans corner on half an hour.
Carno controlled the game in the second half and created numerous chances, with Drew Reynolds seeing a header saved from a corner, Harry Holt hitting the outside of the post and Luke Holt firing just wide of the visitors’ goal from distance.
The second goal came after good work from Harry Holt, who won the ball back and found Harry Bastable, who crossed for Peter Rees to finish at the near post.
It was 3-0 moments later when Jordan Jones curled a free kick into the bottom corner of the net to extend Carno’s lead.
Kris Williams made a fine save from point-blank range at the other end, but Andrew Evans fired just wide from distance, after being set up by Richie Evans.
Kieron Beaton saw a chance go just wide as the hosts finished the game strongly.
It capped a great midweek for Carno who had also sailed into the semi-final of the Spar League Cup by beating Dolgellau 4-0 away from home on Monday.
Carno dominated the tie from start to finish, with Andrew Evans and Jordan Jones both firing wide of the mark, whilst Kieron Beaton crossed for Richie Evans to head right at the home keeper, whilst Harry Bastable also saw a header saved.
Kris Williams made one smart save, but Carno took the lead just after the half hour mark, when Harry Bastable flicked on for Peter Rees to finish from close range.
Carno started the second half with real purpose, as Jordan Jones fired over from an Ollie Lewis cross, before they doubled their advantage when Peter Rees teed up Jordan Jones to drill the ball home.
It was 3-0 moments later, as a sweeping counter attack saw Richie Evans lay the ball off to Andrew Evans, and he curled home from the edge of the penalty box.
The fourth goal came with 10 minutes to go as Andrew Evans crossed for Ioan Humphreys to head the ball against the post and Richie Evans netted the rebound.
Carno will go on to face Berriew in the semi-final at Montgomery next Saturday, 6 May, whilst in the other semi-final Llanrhaeadr face champions Rhayader Town at Berriew on Tuesday, 9 May.
Llanrhaeader were convincing 7-0 winners over Machynlleth in midweek, courtesy of five goals from Marc Griffiths and extras by Alex Hall and Iwan Matthews.
Gareth Severs scored as Aberaeron drew 1-1 away against Llanidloes Town, who equalised through Joe Evans, whilst Knighton beat Llandrindod 2-0, with goals by Sam Williams and Connor Bird.
