ANOTHER two goals by Shaun Cavanagh secured precious points for Porthmadog as they beat Buckley Town 2-0 in their must-win JD Cymru North match.
The windy conditions meant it was almost impossible to play constructive, creative football, but Cavanagh’s two second half goals were of the highest quality.
Buckley had the gale force wind on their backs in the first half, but the Port defence stayed strong and kept their heads, and Richard Harvey was largely untroubled.
Sam Spridgeon’s headed a deep cross wide, Jake Roberts saw his low strike narrowly miss the target, and Josh Jones also saw a near post header go just wide - but the hosts held firm until the interval.
The game was won during the first 15 minutes of the second half. Jay Gibbs opened up the visitors’ defence with a pass out to the right, and he found Jamie McDaid. The winger cut inside and lifted a perfect cross to the back post, allowing Cavanagh to send a bullet header past Makaruk for the first goal.
Just seven minutes later Iwan Lewis sent a superbly controlled ball into space for Cavanagh to chase, and the forward beat the advancing Makaruk with the neatest of lobs into an empty net.
Cavanagh has been on fire since returning to the club and last season’s top scorer has now netted five goals in three games.
Two goals up, and given the conditions it was now Port’s game to lose. This they never looked likely to do as they kept control and came close to increasing their advantage on a couple of occasions.
Jay Gibbs sent an angled shot across goal and narrowly wide, and Rhys Hughes, only minutes after coming onto the pitch, almost made it a dream debut with a pacy run and shot, which keeper Makaruk did well to push over the bar.
Buckley rallied near the end, but again they failed to trouble keeper Harvey and Port held on to secure a big three points.
