FORMER finalists Crannog coasted through to the quarter finals of this year’s Emrys Morgan Cup with a solid 5-0 win over Shropshire border side Newcastle.
The Llangrannog-based outfit, who lost to Cardigan in the final of this prestigious competition two years ago, started slowly playing into what was a very strong wind.
After being forced to defend resiliently in the early stages, they went ahead against the run of play with a super goal.
A flowing move ended with Rhys Davies feeding the ball to George Colven, who smashed the ball across the visiting keeper and into the corner of the visitors’ net.
This was just the spark that Dylan Vaughan Evans’ team needed, and they pulled further away through goals from Gary Davies, with a brace, and Chris Welch, who scored with a close-range finish after good build up work by Colven.
Midfielder Dylan Davies made it 4-0 just before half-time, with the hosts having used the swirling wind to good effect.
It was all Crannog after the restart and they kept the ball well, with keeper Rhydian Morgan rarely called upon, but they never really made this domination pay.
They did, however, grab one more goal eventually through experienced centre back Rhydian Roberts, who was again outstanding, as he rose above a tired defence to head home a Rhys Davies corner.
Bont also secured their place in the last eight of the competition with a battling 3-1 win at home to Hay St Mary’s Reserves.
In tough conditions, the visitors had the better of the early opportunities, squandering several chances to take the lead.
The visitors were punished when a good move from the Tangerines was rounded off by Lee Jones, whose shot was deflected beyond the helpless Saints’ goalkeeper.
The second half belonged to the home side and Fergus Morris ran from deep to what seemed like a lost cause to excellently get on the end of Dewi Sion Evans’s cross and double the home side’s lead.
Another good attacking move saw Jones double his tally for the day from 15 yards out to seemingly put the game to bed.
The Saints, to their credit, kept on battling and they were rewarded when a long range effort found its way to the net from Josh Wisniewski, but a determined Bont remained strong as their quest for a maiden Emrys Morgan trophy continued.
A hat-trick from Rhun Garner helped steer former winners Tregaron Turfs into the last eight of the competition with a 6-1 win over Llanidloes Town Reserves.
Sam Hamer scored for Llanidloes, but Dylan Davies, Ifan Jones and Dan Jones were also on target for the Turfs, who lifted the silverware a decade ago in 2007.
The matches between Berriew Reserves and Cardigan Town, Pencader against Llandysul, Caersws Reserves against Dewi Stars and Llanfyllin against Llanilar were postponed due to adverse weather.
