CEREDIGION totally overran their Powys rivals to win their Regions Cup final trial match 6-2 at Latham Park, Newtown.

The Powys side comprised of players from the Spar Mid Wales division two, the Mid Wales League (South) and the Montgomeryshire Amateur League, and the visitors from the Costcutter and Cambrian Tyres District Leagues.

The game was played at a fast pace on the excellent 3G surface, and it was the hosts who settled first, causing the Ceredigion outfit many problems, with Max McLaughlin, Zac Emberton and Jodeci Dean particularly prominent.

The visitors, however, settled and Jake Kelly and Adrian Hazelby started finding gaps in the home rearguard, and on 25 minutes they took the lead as Hazelby struck a powerful 25 yarder that cannoned in off the bar, giving custodian Nick Lewis no chance.

At the other end, Ceredigion custodian Justin Smith was having an inspired game, but he unfortunately had to come off injured with suspected cracked ribs just on the stroke of half time.

The first job his replacement Graham Keen had to do was to pick the ball out of the net as Powys deservedly drew level with seconds of the half remaining.

In fact the goal came from a Ceredigion-based player, as former Tregaron striker Rhun Garner, now plying his trade with Bow Street, turned and hit an excellent shot into the top corner.

Inspired substitutions by Ceredigion turned the game on its head after the break, with all five goals coming from players off the bench.

They went back in front just minutes after the restart as an excellent length of the pitch move ended with Jason Jones sliding in at the far post to finish off in style.

Back came Powys to equalise for the second time as Max McLaughlin lobbed Graham Keen from fully 30 yards out, when he saw he had advanced too far off his line for a top class finish.

This was as good as it got for the hosts as Ceredigion took control to totally dominate the last half hour.

Another slick passing move saw George Colvern finish from an acute angle to make it 2-3, and the visitors rattled up another three goals in quick succession to leave the hosts stunned.

George Colvern got his second of the match with another top class finish, and following more flowing passing football, Ben Holt and Paul James both hit fine strikes for an emphatic win.

With the talent on show, Central Wales will be able to select a strong squad to represent the Association in the forthcoming Regions Cup.
