PENRHYNCOCH boss Gari Lewis took heart from his side’s plucky performance, despite ultimately falling short in their 2-0 defeat to Bangor City at Cae Baker.

Two second half goals in the space of just three minutes from Marc Williams and Jake Phillips ultimately secured the three points, but Lewis praised his side’s efforts against a strong Bangor outfit.

Penrhyncoch are currently in 12th position, but are only five points off a top six place in a packed Cymru Alliance table.

“I was not too downhearted as it was a good performance against a very good side,” Lewis said. “Had we picked up a point it would have been a good day.

“We came up with a game plan, and the boys stuck to it, but two individual errors ultimately cost us. But we showed we’re not a million miles away, and the way the table is, things can change very quickly.

“If we keep working hard, then we’re good enough to go on a run of wins.”

The Roosters, who last won at the start of September when defeating Flint Town United 1-0, showed plenty of effort and resolve, but just came up short on the day.

Bangor, who recently lost manager Craig Harrison to Connah’s Quay Nomads, showed their qualities on the pitch.

But the hosts had a good chance after just 12 minutes when Craig Williams could only shoot weakly at ex-Aber keeper Chris Mullock, after breaking through.

At the other end, Alex Darlington had an early effort ruled out by a flag for offside, and keeper Leigh Jenkins, on his return from Aberystwyth, also did well to keep out Darlington’s goal-bound header.

Jenkins then saved well from Yalany Baio, after he ran on goal from Stevem Hewitt’s short corner, but before the half hour Penrhyn’s Steff Davies headed over.

Striker Les Davies latched onto Alex Darlington flick on but Sion James did enough to put him off, and Marc Williams wriggled through on goal, but again Jenkins saved well, before Darlington lifted the rebound over the crossbar.

The Citizens finally made the breakthrough on 52 minutes when Hewitt crossed, Les Davies flicked on and Marc Williams tapped home from close range.

Three minutes later the lead was doubled as Les Davies passed to Jake Phillips, who fired low into the net - despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Jenkins.

Penrhyn went close when Antonio Corbisiero crossed for Liam Lewis, but he could not find the target with his header.

Marc Williams went around Jenkins and shot on target, but the keeper recovered well to prevent a third goal, and although Marc Williams and Phillips again went close, the home defence stood firm.

Bangor’s win was tempered by news that centre back Anthony Stephens, who had soldiered on after taking a blow to the face, had suffered a broken jaw.
