ABERYSTWYTH Town’s resurgence continued in the JD Welsh Cup as they dumped holders Bala Town out with a superb 4-0 win at Park Avenue - and the Seasiders have been handed a fourth round tie at Cardiff Met.

Manager Neville Powell was again left beaming by the work-rate and character shown by his side, on the back of a 3-0 league win over Newtown, but he also warned that a massive month lies ahead for the club.

“It was a good performance again, and another clean sheet,” said Powell. “We knew it was going to be a tough game against a good Bala side.

“The lads applied themselves well and won the 50-50 balls. They were the first to every ball, and played some great football. We created the chances and deserved the win again.

“There’s a lot of confidence in the side right now, you can see that they are enjoying their football, and this was a great Welsh Cup win for us.”

A tricky tie awaits at Welsh Premier side Cardiff Met in last 16, but Powell, who has a great pedigree in the competition, says attention now turns to making up ground in the league.

The Seasiders travel to face high-flying Connah’s Quay on Friday, and the Aber boss says he is eager for his side to maintain their momentum.

“You have got to beat TNS if you want to win the Cup, but we are just pleased to be in the next round,” said Powell. “But that’s not until the end of January, so we can put that away.

“We’ll now concentrate on the tough December that we’ve got coming up.

“I’ve said to the players that they must take that work-rate into the coming month. We’ve got TNS and Connah’s Quay away from home, as well as Prestatyn at home, and then the double-header with Carmarthen.

“We must pick points up aplenty in December. If we can do that we will put ourselves in a strong position.”

Aber are level on points with both Prestatyn and Newtown, and two points adrift of eighth-placed Barry Town, and every match will be crucial in the run-up to the league split.

But Connah’s Quay manager Andy Morrison, who has been handed a two-game touchline suspension by the FAW Disciplinary Panel for comments made in a post-match interview, is also targeting league points.

The two sides are yet to meet this season, but the Nomads gave themselves a lift with a 3-0 Welsh Cup win over Cwmbran Celtic, after their four-match winless run in the league.

Following a 10:30am pitch inspection on Friday morning, Connah’s Quay confirmed that the match was on.

• Meanwhile an excellent weekend for Aberystwyth was completed with Bari Morgan’s Under-19s squad winning 5-1 at Merthyr Town on Sunday.

Two penalties from Jack Rimmer, along with goals from Liam Doherty, Josh Crowl and Ianto ap Dafydd saw the Aberystwyth youngsters continue their strong form in the Welsh Premier Development League South.

“It was a great three points away from home,” said Morgan. “The boys put in a very mature performance, and they had to really fight and stick together at times during this match.”

With eight wins from 10 league matches, Morgan’s team are looking to keep up the pressure on leaders Swansea City when they entertain fourth-placed Cardiff Met on Sunday.

Aberystwyth Town Ladies also had an excellent 3-1 win over Cwmbran Celtic at Park Avenue last Sunday, as goals from Steph Land, Tania Wylde and Hannah Pusey consolidated second position in the Women’s Welsh League (South). This Sunday they will travel to face Caerphilly Castle.
