PLUCKY Penrhyncoch will face Prestatyn Town in the third round of the Welsh Cup following a spirited 1-0 win against Llanelli Town in tough conditions at Stebonheath Park.
A stunning Antonio Corbisiero volley early on was decisive as the Roosters edged past their depleted JD Cymru South hosts.
Fielding several youth players due to injuries the home side were pegged back from the first whistle with Penrhyn bossing possession without creating a clear-cut opening.
But that changed on 14 minutes when Corbisiero directed Jack Rimmer’s cross beyond keeper Scott Coughlan.
In bitterly cold conditions, the visitors continued to press but it was Llanelli who almost levelled late in the half.
Zack Brown fired wide on 37 minutes before James Loveridge forced keeper Leigh Jenkins into action with a speculative long range effort.
And the home side threatened again on 52 minutes when Jenkins made a mistake allowing the Llanelli attacker to have a shot on goal. But the keeper’s blushes were saved when Jon Foligno cleared off the line.
At the other end, Tom Evans fired wide after good work by Steff Davies.
However, it was Llanelli who were in control after the turnaround but they just couldn’t find the back of the net.
Tom Evans saw a shot saved by Coughlan in a rare foray by the visitors.
And after a couple of late substitutions, Steffan Gittins for Foligno and Carwyn Morgan for Lance Jones, they held on for a valuable victory.
The Roosters return to league action on Saturday to face Llandudno at Maesdu Park.
