Aberystwyth Town 2
Barry Town 1
ABER boss Antonio Corbisiero has praised his side’s “fantastic reaction” after falling behind against Barry Town to battle back to take the three points at Park Avenue in the JD Cymru Premier on Saturday.
Marcus Day put the visitors in front on 23 minutes but the Seasiders drew level on the stroke of half time.
Mike Lewis had been the busier of the two keepers but he was beaten when Matty Jones’ superb deep cross found Sam Phillips at the back post, and he tapped home an equaliser which Aber more than deserved.
And with time running out Jones despatched a sublime left-footed free kick into the right corner after Jamie Veale had been bundled over.
Corbisiero said: “It was a really pleasing result, the boys were tremendous.
“We conceded quite early but had a fantastic reaction from then.
“We created a lot of chances and Sam Phillips could have had a hat-trick in the first half.
“If it was down to me I would have given their keeper Mike Lewis man of the match.
“He pulled off some fantastic saves, clear goalscoring opportunities but he did very well.
“I thought that we dominated the game second half, created lots of chances going forward, we looked very dangerous and good on the counter.
“Most pleasing for us was that we looked stronger and fitter than Barry.
“I’m absolutely over the moon with the performance, the new signings that we had came in and made a big difference and with the players that we retained from last season it’s a good starting point for us going forward.”
He added: “To win the game as we did in the 91st minute with a fantastic free kick from Matty Jones, you can’t write it.
“Overall, we’re very happy with the win but we’ll work hard now again for Friday looking forward to the tough test against Connah’s Quay.
“We’ll show them the respect that they deserve but we’re going there to try to get a positive result like we did against Barry.”
