LLANIDLOES Town reignited their challenge in the MMP Mid Wales League division one with a terrific 2-0 victory at previously unbeaten leaders Caersws.

After slipping to a disappointing 3-2 loss at home to Kerry earlier in the week, it was the perfect riposte from the Daffs as manager Hugh Clarke - the former Bluebirds defender - made a winning return to the Recreation Ground.

The Daffs took the lead through an own goal by Paul Grant, who diverted a Llion Jenkins cross into his net, and the home defender was then sent off after pulling back Connor Bird when through on goal.

George Clarke then headed in a second goal from an Adam Worton free kick before the break, to leave 10-man Caersws with an uphill task in the second half

The high flying hosts rarely looked like they could find a way back as Llanidloes held a tight rein after the break to end their neighbours’ 13-game unbeaten start. Llanidloes are now up to second place in the table, six points behind the Bluebirds, but they do have a game in hand.

“After losing to Kerry, it was a must-win game for us to keep the league alive, and all the lads were superb,” said Clarke. “We fully deserved to win, everyone was up for it. We were disciplined and well organised, and this result gives other clubs the belief they can go there and win.

“In the second half we were boring, we did not need to chase the game, and just wanted to make sure we kept our lead. They had a couple of chances, but so did we, and it was a brilliant win in the end. They could have no complaints.”

Clarke added: “After losing to Kerry a few days before, this shows the highs and lows of football. We had enough chances to have won by two or three that night, but their keeper was superb, and perhaps our minds were on the Caersws game.

“It was a great reaction on Saturday as we still had five or six players out, and we can now go into Saturday’s Welsh Cup tie with Pontypridd full of confidence.

“The league is our priority this season, so the pressure is off the players, but it’s still a game that we want to win as it would be nice to have a run in the cup.”

On a weekend that saw the sporting calendar decimated by Storm Callum, Llanfair got their game on against Churchstoke, and they were rewarded as three second half goals secured a 3-0 victory.

Two goals from Alun Hughes, including a good finish across goal, and a Josh Astley goal secured the points to consolidate Llanfair's top six position.

In the only other game to go ahead, Welshpool Town moved above Llanfair on goal difference as they eased to an emphatic 9-1 win at Tywyn/Bryncrug.

Will Thomas led the way with five goals, and Neil Pryce, with a brace, Josh Morgan and Ricky Litchfield completed the scoring. Dave Jenkins netted a consolation goal for the struggling home side.

The matches between Bow Street and Carno, Aberaeron and Kerry, Llandrindod and Berriew, and Radnor Valley against Builth Wells were postponed due to high winds and waterlogged pitches, as were the entire Cambrian Tyres and Costcutter Ceredigion League schedules.
