LLANIDLOES Town returned to the top of the MMP Mid Wales League division one last weekend by brushing aside Radnor Valley 4-0, to stretch their unbeaten start to the season to seven games.
Having relinquished pole position the night before to Welshpool Town, who beat rivals Berriew 2-1, the Daffs wasted no time in reclaiming pole position with a convincing win at Victoria Avenue.
“We were pretty comfortable against Radnor, as comfortable as we have been this season,” said Llanidloes manager Hugh Clarke, whose side have gleaned 17 points from their first seven outings.
“We always look as though we’re going to score, with the forwards we have got and the runners from midfield - and the good thing is that we are sharing the goals out. The quality of our balls into the box has also been very good this season.”
Llani soon made the running against Radnor Valley, and carved a two-goal advantage by half-time. Despite the hosts rallying early in the second period, two more goals clinched a convincing victory.
Daf Carruthers got the first when latching onto Ash Owen’s through ball before chesting down and producing a good finish, and George Clarke then hammered home a second in a goalmouth scramble following Gareth Owen’s long throw-in.
The hosts missed a chance to extend their lead when Connor Bird had his penalty saved, after Carruthers had been brought down, but the Daffs were soon 3-0 up as George Clarke fired home an excellent left foot strike from outside the box for his second goal of the afternoon.
Youngster Rhys Evans then came off the bench to complete the scoring with another neat finish from 16 yards, to lift the Daffs one point clear of Welshpool at the top of the table, after seven matches.
Aberaeron are still seeking their first points after another spirited performance on their travels went unrewarded in a narrow 2-1 defeat at Llandrindod Wells.
It has been a tough start to the season for the Seagulls, with five of their first six mathes being away from home, and they made the long journey to Radnorshire with a bare 11 man squad, which included two players from the reserves’ squad.
Aberaeron had kept things tight in the first half an hour and they took the lead through Lee Perkins, only for the hosts to equalise through a penalty, scored by Michael Collister just two minutes later.
Three minutes later Michael ‘Shaka’ Watkins made it 2-1 with a great effort, and despite creating good second half chances, Aberaeron were unable to find an equaliser in the second period as they succumbed to a sixth successive defeat.
Caersws meanwhile notched their fifth league win as goals from Craig Harris and Peter Rees earned them an excellent 2-0 win on the road, away at Builth Wells.
On Friday night, Welshpool Town had temporarily moved to the top of division one as goals from Henry Watkins and Will Thomas earned them a 2-1 win over Berriew, who had opened the scoring early on through Charlie Humphreys.
Newbridge are setting the pace at the top of the Mid Wales League division two, and they were 5-0 winners at Forden United on Friday evening, with goals from Ollie Woods, Lyndon Jones, Dave Thomas, Ryan Powell and Aeron Powell.
A Tom Crichton hat-trick meanwhile saw Presteigne comprehensively beat rivals Knighton 3-0 at Llanandras Park.
