LES Davies finally netted his first two Welsh Premier League goals for Bala Town since joining in the summer as the Lakesiders continued their revival with a 2-0 win over Barry Town at Maes Tegid.
The big striker fired into the bottom corner of the net after 10 minutes to open the scoring, and then crashed home a second goal from the edge of the box on 22 minutes as Bala notched back-to-back wins.
Manager Colin Caton hopes that his side has turned a corner after their five-match winless run, and they will be looking to carry that momentum into Saturday’s match against bottom side Carmarthen.
“I thought we played very well against a good Barry Town side,” said Caton. “They are really well organised and play some good football, but it was a good performance from us in tough conditions.
“I’m happy Les has got off the mark, but it’s not just his scoring. He brings other people into play and his all round performance was capped by two good goals.”
Not even Storm Brian could halt Bala as Mike Hayes brought the ball down, turned and found Davies, who drove home into the bottom corner after just 11 minutes.
It could have been 2-0 from the restart when Ian Sheridan’s goalbound effort from inside the penalty box was blocked, but in the 22nd minute Bala scored again.
Some excellent work from Nathan Burke brought the ball to Davies’ feet on the edge of the area, and the former Bangor City marksman curled the ball in first time into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Both sides struggled to gain rhythm in very difficult conditions, although Barry’s Drew Fahiya was denied by an excellent Ashley Morris save, before Kayne McLaggon then missed an opportunity from close range from a Drew Fahiya delivery.
The second half didn’t see a let up in the elements, with gusts of 40mph, but Bala adapted well and kept the ball on the deck.
A shot by Chris Venables was deflected wide for a corner, before Stuart Jones’ free header was placed beyond the upright.
On 63 minutes, Hayes linked up with Davies, but sent his volley narrowly wide of the post, and Barry’s Mike Lewis was the busier of the two goalkeepers, as he got down low to keep out a drive by Hayes.
Davies also saw a shot from 25 yards whistle wide, and substitute Andrai Jones fired over with seven minutes left to play.
During injury time, a stunning cross by Evans found Davies who had shaken off his marker, but his diving header went inches over to deny the striker a hat-trick.
Davies, who has scored over 120 Welsh Premier League goals, including spells at Porthmadog, Bangor and Connah’s Quay, was delighted to get off the mark for Bala, but praised a determined team display.
“It is good to get my first two goals, but it was a solid team performance and we were spot-on right from the start,” he said.
“Conditions were tough in the wind and rain, that’s where the hard work comes in, and our work-rate made it hard for them.
“It’s always good to get a couple of goals, but the main thing was the three points.”
