LLANIDLOES Town offered plenty of festive cheer as they kept the Spar Mid Wales League leaders firmly in their sights with a 5-0 hammering of 10-man Llandrindod Wells at Victoria Avenue on Boxing Day.
With the league’s top four sides all winning, the Daffs remained third in division one - seven points adrift of leaders Welshpool Town, but with two games in hand.
It’s shaping up to be a closely fought race for honours, with Llanrhaeadr - one place behind in fourth - underlining their credentials with a 5-1 win at Llanfair United.
After Llandrindod had a player sent off for violent conduct early on, the Daffs were always in the ascendancy before taking charge with four second half goals.
Gareth Owen got the first when firing a left foot strike in the bottom corner midway through the half, while Harri Clarke had a headed effort ruled out for offside after netting from a Richie Evans cross.
Llanidloes really made the most of their one man advantage in the second period as Llandrindod’s earlier efforts started to take their toll in the heavy conditions.
George Clarke smashed a 20-yarder into the top corner to double the lead, and Owen notched his second from a Richie Evans through ball to increase the margin.
Evans then got on the scoresheet from a rebound, after Josh Hartrick had struck the post, before substitute Ash Owen completed the nap hand for Llani, after Gareth Owen had been headed across goal.
Honours ended even in a 1-1 draw between Aberaeron and Bow Street, with Mattie Davies on target for the hosts while Tom Williams replied for the Magpies.
Welshpool took the derby spoils as goals from ex-Rhiewsider Will Thomas and Adam Davies sealed a 2-0 win at Berriew.
Llanrhaeadr celebrated a resounding 5-1 victory at Llanfair United, with Khyam Wytton and Iwan Matthews both netting twice, and Tom Evans also scoring.
Carno hit the goal trail with Peter Rees and Luke Evans both netting twice in a 6-0 win over Tywyn Bryncrug, with Jac Petrie and Scott Williams completing an emphatic victory for Chris Davies’ side.
Knighton Town celebrated a 2-1 derby win over Radnor Valley, with goals from Connor Bird and Danny Ives cancelling a Callum Matthews strike for the Goats.
Meanwhile Machynlleth’s scheduled clash at home to Borth was postponed.
Elsewhere Builth Wells extended their lead at the top of the second division with a 4-1 derby win at home to Newbridge.
Jack Hammond starred with a brace and Andrew Jones and Charlie Boucher were also on target, Aeron Powell replying.
