PENRHYNCOCH will win the Spar Mid Wales League's championship title if they can beat fourth-placed Hay St Mary’s in their final league match at Cae Baker on Saturday (ko 2.30pm).

The Roosters are one point clear of rivals Knighton Town at the top of division one - but the Radnor Robins will be determined to capitalise on any slip-up at home to Llanrhaeadr in their final game.

On Wednesday night, Penrhyn had left it late before substitute Dean Evans fired an 86th minute winner to take his side to the top with a dramatic 3-2 win over Tywyn/Bryncrug at Cae Baker.

Looking to bounce back from their last-gasp defeat to Carno on Monday, Penrhyn made the perfect start as Arron Lemon’s cross was headed down by Mattie Davies for Jonathan Evans to finish on the volley.

Three minutes later, a cross come shot across goal by Leomon found its way into the back of the net, and as this stage Penrhyn looked well on course for victory.

Second-from-bottom Tywyn refused to surrender, however, and as Penrhyn took their foot off the gas, Aston Heath reduced the deficit low drive on 36 minutes.

At the other end, Evans saw an effort headed off the goalline by Paul Grant, but Penrhyn were stunned on the hour when Aled Jones netted the equaliser, after the ball had hit the bar following a corner.

With Penrhyn’s title hopes in the balance, the home side stepped up, but time was quickly running out as the visitors defended in numbers to maintain parity.

Dean Evans replaced Lemon with 10 minutes to go, and it was the former Bow Street striker who snatched a vital win when he curled the ball home from the edge of the penalty area, to the relief and delight of the home supporters.

• Two days earlier, Penrhyn had suffered a last-gasp 1-0 defeat at third-placed Carno, where an injury time breakaway goal from Jordan Jones secured the points.

The Greens had a strong claim for a penalty in the first 15 minutes turned away when Ioan Humphreys went down in the box, and Ashley Owen and Andrew Evans tested the keeper with long range shots.

Their best chance of the half fell to Andrew Evans, who he gambled on a headed back pass, but volleyed over the bar.

Penrhyn battled well but failed to test keeper Chris Brown, who came out well and collect any balls played into the box, with Jon Foligno being a threat in the air.

The second half was an even affair, and Carno’s Steve Jones from the edge of the box forced Lee Jenkins into a fine save.

The Greens’ Andrew Evans tried a volley from the edge of the box, off an Ashley Owen corner, before heading straight at the keeper from a Ioan Humphreys cross.

Penrhyncoch, needing a win to go top of the table, pushed on and with five minutes to go they had a golden opportunity to secure the points when they were awarded a penalty, after foul by Daniel Lewis.

Keeper Chris Brown, however, pulled off a fantastic save by diving to his right to keep out Mark Gornall’s spot kick, and then they were hit by a sucker punch as Carno broke on the counter attack to score.

Ben Richards won the ball back and passed it to Danny Pierce. He found Gregg Brown, who hit a diagonal pass on the one to Peter Rees, who hit it back across the pitch for Ioan Humphreys to run onto. He then played it first time into the path of Jordan Jones, who completed a superb move by firing a last-gasp winner.
