BORTH United Reserves ended their Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League campaign on a positive note with a thrilling 4-3 home win over Aberystwyth University Reserves at Uppingham Fields.

Four goals by Liam Lewis sealed their sixth league win of the campaign, to lift them above Machynlleth Reserves and out of the bottom three in division one.

Borth started brightly and they opened the scoring when a right wing cross was dropped by the keeper and Liam Lewis pounced to score into the open net.

They soon doubled the lead when a long ball out of defence from Mikey Bailey saw the ever-alert Lewis chip the ball over the keeper for his second of the game.

The students rallied and Shaun Roberts reduced the deficit, courtesy of a cool finish, but Borth responded well and lively Lewis completed a well-deserved hat-trick as half-time neared.

With the strengthening wind in their favour as the second half progressed, the students again cut Borth’s lead as Henry Nicholson’s cross from the right wing evaded the keeper’s despairing save to nestle into the bottom corner of the net.

Almost immediately Liam Lewis claimed his fourth goal of the afternoon with a low shot, but to their credit the students never gave up and Henry Nicholson scored with a superb shot.

Borth’s defence held out in what remained of the match for a narrow win, however, as the students succumbed to an eighth league defeat.

Tregaron Turfs also produced a positive end of season performance as they notched a 4-0 triumph away at Cambrian Tyres League Cup winners Talybont.

Llyr Davies led the way with a hat-trick and Dylan Davies also found the net to consolidate their top five position in the league table.

Llanilar had moved up into third place in their final game of the season as goals from Dan John and Guto Roberts sealed a 2-1 win over Aberystwyth University Reserves in midweek.

George Taylor netted for the Aberystwyth students, who were due to travel to Penrhyncoch Reserves on Tuesday, Talybont on Thursday and finally Tregaron Turfs this Saturday.

Meanwhile Talybont Reserves had clinched the Second Division Championship on Tuesday evening when they celebrated a 3-1 win at Llanilar Reserves.

Goals from Jamie Evans, Chris Wylde and Anthony Vasquez sealed their title, which was fine consolation after missing out on reaching the Second Division Trophy the previous week.

Aberystwyth University Thirds and Dolgellau Reserves, who both had chances of winning division two, both saw their title hopes end as they drew 2-2 at the Marian on Tuesday.

Levi Challonor and Jamie Stuart scored for the students, with George Jackson-Townshend and Dominic Thomas scoring for Dolgellau, as both missed out on winning the division title.

Last weekend Dolgellau Reserves secured runners-up spot as they beat Llanilar Reserves 4-2, courtesy of a hat-trick from Dominic Thomas and one by George Jackson-Townshend.

Dolgellau Reserves will take on Aberystwyth University Thirds in the Cambrian Tyres Second Division Trophy Final tonight (Wednesday, 7pm) at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue.
