DOLGELLAU made the perfect response to their nightmare performance at Abermule as they consolidated third spot in the Spar Mid Wales League division two with a convincing 4-1 triumph over Builth Wells last weekend. Two goals from Dominic Thomas and singles from Dennis Bates and David Edwards sealed their eight league win of the current season.Early home chances had seen Dominic Thomas and Ieuan Brooks force saves, before Dennis Bates fired the first goal, after visiting keeper Andy Claridge had parried a strike from David Edwards.
Five minutes later, however, Builth were back on level terms when Charlie Bouchete’s over-hit a crossfield ball from 45 yards out sailed over home keeper Darren Andrews into the back of the net.
Dolgellau deservedly regained the lead on 32 minutes when, from a Ryan Thomas cross, Thomas blasted the ball past Claridge from the edge of the box.
Thomas and Brooks both fired over, and Edwards had a shot was blocked as Dolgellau finished the first half well on top.
After the break, Will Cleaton forced a save from Andrews from a narrow angle, but on the hour Dolgellau made it 3-1.
Dafydd Jones saw his shot blocked, but the ball fell to Edwards, who fired into the far corner of the net from 16 yards out.
Edwards shot just over as Builth were forced to defend deeply, but on 85 minutes an Edwards free kick was saved by Claridge, only for Thomas to latch onto the rebound and fire home to make it 4-1.
There was still time for Edwards to side-foot wide from the penalty spot, after being upended in the box, as Dolgellau eased to a comfortable home win.
Borth United only required a point at Newbridge to keep title rivals Kerry off top spot, but three goals in first 10 minutes set the hosts up for a shock 4-1 win.
A bright start from the home team saw Matthew Aubrey open the scoring with a low shot, and then Lyndon Jones quickly doubled their lead with a fine finish.
Borth were further stunned as Alphie Stonefield made it 3-0 with a header on 10 minutes, and it could have been worse as Aled Jones also hit the post for the hosts.
Newbridge continued to hold the upper hand in the second half, and it was no surprise when they increased their lead, with Ollie Woods scoring from close in.
Borth’s Liam Lewis scored with a superb low shot into the bottom corner, but there was no way back for the visitors.
On Friday, title rivals Kerry had moved to the top on goal difference, as both Daryl Mcwatt and Marc Hughes scored twice in an impressive 4-1 win at Llansantffraid, who scored through Toby Thomas.
Aberystwyth University’s recent resurgence in division two was halted as they ended the year on a disappointing note with a 3-0 defeat away at Churchstoke.
The students had soared to eighth in the table, a run that has seen boss Sean Fahey earn the Spar Mid Wales League Division Two Manager of the Month accolade.
But they fell short at Churchstoke, and were not helped by illnesses that disrupted their side, with five players missing from the University’s starting line-up.
All the goals came in the first half, with Andrew Green opening the scoring with a neat back post header from a Max Mclaughlin cross, and Joe Haycock then scored twice, the first a wonderful team goal, and the second a left foot volley from a pin-point Andrew Green cross.
The students came back into the game in the second half, but the Clarets’ defence held firm to get back to winning ways.
Meanwhile Josh Gardner scored a hat-trick, and Justin Davies netted once as Presteigne eased their relegation concerns with a 4-1 win over Four Crosses, who had scored through Gaz Jones.
