DOLGELLAU made a winning return to life back in the Spar Mid Wales League as goals from Dominic Thomas and David Edwards, from the penalty spot, earned them a 2-0 home win over Presteigne.

The win could have been made easier had a number of chances been taken, but last season’s Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District champions found the net at crucial times to secure the points.

As early as the first minute a Dominic Thomas cross was missed, and then Dave Edwards fired a shot straight at visiting keeper Jamie Durban from eight yards as a fired-up Dolgellau made a lively start.

George Jackson-Townshend set up Dominic Thomas, who sliced wide, and then a quickly-taken free kick from Nathan Thomas sent Edwards clear, however the striker lost control when clear on goal.

Edwards also sent clear Thomas clear, but he was unable to beat keeper Durban - before at the other end a Merv Stevens shot was pushed away by keeper Darren Andrews, who then saved the rebound.

An Elliott Williams cross found the head of Zac Evans, but his effort was off target, whilst at the other end Edwards crossed in for Jackson-Townshend, who was beaten to the ball by defender Cai Davas.

The deadlock was finally broken on 42 minutes when Dolgellau’s Dan Roberts sent Edwards in down the left, and when his shot-cum-cross was spilled, Thomas was on hand to fire home the rebound.

Dolgellau started the second half brightly, and Thomas sent Jackson-Townshend clear, but his near post shot saved, before Thomas and Edwards also forced saves.

Presteigne, however, were still in the game, and a long ball over the top resulted in a chance for Matt Strangnodd, but Andrews saved well - and then on 65 minutes Elliott Williams also forced a save.

Dolgellau responded positively as Edwards sent Thomas clear, and his cross was scrambled clear for a corner kick. The ball was cleared off the line twice from Ben Van Gucci, and centre back, Mike Parkes then cleared the crossbar.

Edwards then saw his cross from the by-line cleared to safety, from which a long ball forward resulted in an opportunity for Spencer Morgan, saved by Andrews.

Finally, with five minutes remaining, Dolgellau secured the three points when a dangerous long-ball from Presteigne was intercepted and played down the line by Steffan Parry, sending Edwards on a run.

He beat one defender and pushed the ball past another, only to be taken down inside the area by Kai Dayas. Edwards made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick to seal a well-deserved home win.
