DOLGELLAU took one step towards completing a double within the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth District League as they lifted the Len and Julia Newman Memorial Trophy with a 3-2 win over Borth United Reserves at Bow Street.
The Meirionnydd side created the best chances in the opening period and took the lead with a rasping drive from an acute angle by David Edwards - and Borth were perhaps fortunate to go in at half time with only a one goal deficit.
Dolgellau had missed some gilt-edged chances to increase their lead before the break, but Borth came out in the second half with real purpose and equalised when Mikey Bailey fired his low shot through a crowded goalmouth.
The title hopefuls, however, responded positively and quick-fire goals by Darryl Johns and Dominic Thomas put them back in control.
Borth kept their hopes alive when Huw Jones lobbed the ball over the keeper to score in the last quarter of the match, but despite some last-gasp attacks from Borth Dolgellau held firm.
In the Second Division Trophy Final, Talybont Reserves defeated division two leaders Llanrhystud 2-1 to lift the trophy at Cae Piod.
A depleted Llanrhystud were only able to field 10 players from the start due to the unavailability of several key players, and Talybont made them pay with Ben Hall’s first half goal.
Talybont increased their lead 20 minutes from time through Chris Wylde, but a spirited 10-man Llanrhystud battled to the end, and Liam Lewis scored a deserved goal in added time.
Aberystwyth University Seconds increased the pressure on league challengers Dolgellau on Tuesday with a 3-0 win at home to Talybont.
An Owen Whitmore double, and a sweetly struck Matty Hunton effort lifted the students four points clear of Dolgellau at the summit.
The University, however, have played three more games than Dolgellau, whose match against Tregaron was postponed last weekend.
In the race for the title, Dolgellau were due to play Borth Reserves on Tuesday night, before entertaining Padarn United on Thursday and then facing rivals Aberystwyth University Reserves in a potential title decider on Saturday.
Borth Reserves responded well to their cup defeat to Dolgellau in midweek by defeating a well-drilled Talybont 3-0 at Uppingham Field.
Callum Pritchard opened the scoring for the visitors with a low shot beyond Sean Gates, but the lead lasted only a few minutes as Ryan Davies pounced on a defensive mistake to equalise.
After a fairly even start to the second half birthday boy Ryan Davies gave Borth the lead with a superb finish, but back came Talybont with Gareth Hughes scoring from close range.
The in-form Ben Byrne again gave Borth the lead again with a cool finish, only for Jamie Barron level the scores once more at the far post.
The scoring, however, was completed by Steve Bailey, whose low shot sealed the 4-3 win.
There were plenty of goals in division two as hat-tricks from Mike Fitzpatrick and Ben Hall and doubles by Chris Wylde and Jamie Morgan saw Talybont Reserves hammer Llanon 10-1.
Aberystwyth University Thirds romped to a 9-0 victory against Aberdyfi Reserves, keeping themselves hot on the heels of league leaders Llanrhystud. Hat-tricks from Rian Devlin and Nathan Ash led the way, with Henry Nicholson and Jon Coles also scoring, along with Chris Warden, who netted a powerful free-kick.
On Monday, the Thirds had beaten Llanilar Reserves 3-2 with goals from Nathan Lang, an own goal and Shaun Roberts securing the win.
Llanrhystud could secure the division two title in their two midweek matches, before they travel to face Aberystwyth University Thirds this weekend.
