DOLGELLAU moved into a top six position in the Spar Mid Wales League division two table as they emerged as 3-1 winners at home against Montgomery.
Despite Robbie Harthsorn scoring for Monty, goals by Dominic Thomas, Dion Jones and Sion Lloyd secured a fifth win from nine league outings, to stay within two points of third-placed Hay St Mary’s, and with three games in hand.
After their 3-1 defeat away at Abermule the previous weekend, this win will leave Dolgellau in good heart for their tough trip to face unbeaten Builth Wells in the Central Wales Cup this weekend.
Aberystwyth University meanwhile lost ground as their home fixture with Dyffryn Banw was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
The students, who have slipped down to fourth in the table after the washout, will hope to get back to action when they entertain rivals Borth United in the second round of the Central Wales Cup this Saturday.
Jack Biggs had scored twice as Hay St Mary’s moved above the University into third place in the table with a solid 3-1 win over Newbridge on Friday night.
Biggs headed the Saints in front in the 14th minute, but Aaeron Powell netted a reply seven minutes later.
The game was end to end for the rest of half, but on the stroke of half time Josh Wisniewski was the quickest to react after the Newbridge keeper had spilled the ball again and he fired the Saints into a 2-1 lead.
The Saints upped the tempo in the second half and they had big shouts for a penalty denied when Tom Landon was brought down inside the box, but the referee waved played on.
Adi Lawford and Landon had other chances to extend the lead but couldn’t find the back of the net, but with five minutes to go Matty Tong squared to Biggs, who netted from close range.
Newbridge were awarded a penalty when Chris Preece was adjudged to have tripped a visiting player in the area, but goalkeeper Jordan Bailey dived to his left to deny Powell his second goal of the match.
Builth Wells maintained their eight-point lead at the top with a 3-0 win at Talgarth Town, with two goals by Jamie McIlroy and a Harry Bastable penalty.
After a tough second half Brecon Northcote earned their third clean sheet in four games with a 1-0 over Penybont, with Joel Evans’ goal separating the teams.
On Friday, second-placed Llansantffraid had kept pace with a 4-0 win over Abermule. Wayne Austin scored a brace and Rob Carruthers and Nathan Prodger also netted for the hosts.
