PWLLHELI set the perfect mood for the festive season by achieving their best performance and result of their Lock Stock Welsh Alliance campaign so far, with a 4-0 triumph away against Llandyrnog United.

On a day when virtually the whole league programme was swamped by waterlogged grounds, manager Jason Jones and his squad were surprised to be told they could travel to play at Cae Nant.

On arrival, they found Llandyrnog’s pitch to be heavy, but Penmaenmawr referee Richard Burke, after some thought, declared it was just about playable.

Pwllheli, albeit having only 12 players available to travel, proved they were more adaptable to the testing conditions and gained an early lead, before taking complete charge in the second half.

The breakthrough goal was timed at 12 minutes and Rhodri Scott was Pwllheli’s scorer, with a rasping shot from eight yards, past keeper Ryan Goldstone, after effective build up play by team mates.

Jamie Banks was the instigator, making a penetrating run down the left flank, beating three opponents, and supplying Mark Jones, who set up Scott to finish.

The home side surged forward several times during the rest of the first period for Dan Roberts and Tom Wayman to get into threatening positions, but Pwllheli’s Jamie Underwood was not troubled.

Pwllheli’s take-over in the second half began within minutes of the restart, when Mark Jones went close to scoring with a header from Carl Jones’s left-wing cross.

It became 2-0 on 50 minutes, courtesy of debutant Lucas Tobic, who surged into the box to latch on to Mark Jones’s pass and slammed the ball into the home net.

Now based locally, having returned from Wolverhampton, Barry Evans created Pwllheli’s third goal on 62 minutes, supplying Carl Jones out on the right, from where he despatched a glorious angled 20-yard effort in the back of the net.

Llandyrnog’s Iwan Davies figured in a defiant counter-attack that ended with a powerful shot that flew just over Pwllheli’s bar, but the visitors had the last say.

Mark Jones, who had contributed to many of the team’s best situations, got his reward on 80 minutes by hammering a shot, from Tobic’s right-wing supply, that the home keeper found too hot to handle.
