Aberystwyth Town have missed out on two anticipated summer signings after Les Davies and Leo Riley both chose to sign for lower league clubs.
The Park Avenue club had reported that striker Davies and defender Riley had agreed terms to join the Seasiders for the new season - but both have now signed for north Wales clubs.
Davies, who won the Welsh Cup three times, as well as the Welsh Premier League title with Bangor City, has joined new outfit Clwb Pêl-Droed Bangor 1876.
The Club, formed by the Bangor City Supporters Association in May, in protest at the way the former Welsh Premier outfit was being run, has been granted permission by the FAW to play in the fifth-tier Gwynedd League.
“I’m really excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead,” said Bangor legend Davies. “I’m committed to giving fans a football club that they can be proud of, and one that they and the community can support.”
Riley, who was one of the stand-out performers for Cymru Alliance champions Airbus Broughton last season, has joined second-tier FAW Championship North outfit Rhyl, rather than signing forms for Aber.
“Aberystwyth Town can confirm that, despite agreeing terms with the Club, Les Davies and Leo Riley have decided to sign elsewhere for teams lower down the pyramid,” said a club statement.
“They will be replaced in the first team squad, and any new signings will be announced when, and only when their registrations have been confirmed by the Football Association of Wales.”
Matthew Bishop’s first team squad reassembled for their first training session last Tuesday, with their first friendly set for Tuesday, 9 July at home to last season’s Mid Wales League division one runners-up Llanidloes.
Four days later they host FAW Championship North outfit Gresford Athletic at Park Avenue, before travelling to play Gloucester City on Thursday, 18 July at Evesham United, and then hosting Alvechurch on 27 July.
The Seasiders play a Nathaniel MG Cup tie on 9/10 August, before then starting their Welsh Premier League campaign with a Dyfed derby at home to Carmarthen Town, on Friday, 16 August.
They then travel to face Barry Town United in Friday, 23 August, and on the following Monday they host champions The New Saints.
Meanwhile the Club has confirmed the appointment of Gavin Allen as Head of Coaching and Head of Youth.
The full time role will oversee the Club’s Academy, develop players and community links, oversee coaching development and liase with the FAW Trust to deliver on their key strategic aims.
Allen, who possesses a Uefa A-license coaching qualification, was appointed as first team assistant manager last September to Neville Powell.
The former striker made 238 appearances for Aber, scoring 113 goals in three spells over a nine year period, as well as spells at Bangor, Barry and Carmarthen.
Allen was assistant manager to former Seasider Gari Lewis at Penrhyncoch, and worked as a coach at Aberystwyth University, as well as in coaching roles within the Aberystwyth Academy.
