PORTHMADOG’s new boss Sion Eifion has confirmed that key player Sion Edwards has decided to leave the club to accept the offer of a contract at Colwyn Bay, which is closer to his home.
The 31 year-old, who started 25 games last season, scoring five goals, will be well remembered for his excellent supply of crosses and his ability to influence games.
“To lose Sion is obviously a disappointment, but we understand and respect his personal decision,” said Eifion. “He’s been great for the club over the past two years, and all at Porthmadog wish him well going forward.”
Eifion, however, confirmed that Josh Banks, who spent the tail end of last season with his home club at Pwllheli, will return to the Traeth for next season, having first joined the club back in 2012.
“I’m glad that Banksy has decided to return after a brief stint with Pwllheli,” said the Porthmadog boss. “Josh struggled with a couple of injuries last term and needed to go out and get some game time with his local club.
“He will add much needed balance to our backline, and we will look forward to seeing him back at the Traeth.”
Eifion confirmed that last season’s skipper Iddon Price and keeper Paul Pritchard have already committed for next season, as have brothers Tomos and Ifan Emlyn.
“Paul had an outstanding first season at Port last year and his experience will be vital next season in our push for the league,” Eifion said.
“Iddon is Port through and through and after much interest in him last year, I am delighted to be able to keep him with us for next season. He’s a rock at the heart of our defence and a huge influence in the changing rooms.”
He added: “It’s also great to be able to confirm the Emlyn brothers for next season.
“These are two honest and hard working players, who I know will give their all again to the club, both have set some very high standards.”
Indeed the squad is taking shape, with the experienced duo of Iwan Lewis and Rob Evans also committing.
“Rob is someone that I’m really looking forward to working with next season,” said Eifion. “As well as being a great player he is also a big character in the dressing room. His experience at this level will be invaluable.
“Iwan is another important player in the squad, who I’m delighted to keep hold of for next season. He’s the driving force in our midfield and he brings an abundance of energy to our performances.
“Iws is very driven and motivated and that is exactly the type of character that we need to push on next season.”
