CHAMPIONS League football was played at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue ground on Wednesday night with some supporters allowed back into stadiums as Covid restrictions were eased.
Connah’s Quay Nomads faced the Armenian champions and secured a 2-2 draw with FC Alashkert to remain in contention of progression from the first qualifying round.
The game was played at Park Avenue after the stadium was designated as a UEFA Category 2 Stadium following a site visit in May, joining The New Saints’ Park Hall as the only Cymru Premier grounds to be given that status.
Speaking after the decision club secretary Thomas Crockett: "Hosting Champions League football in particular is a major coup for the club, and this in itself will fund ground improvements which will ensure Park Avenue can host European matches for years to come.”
The Nomads took the lead against the run of play against the technical visitors, Craig Curran firing home after the visitors’ keeper failed to deal with Michael Wilde’s initial effort.
A brace from Russian attacker David Khurtsidze put Alashkert in the driving seat but George Horan’s goal on 79 minutes provided a lifeline for the Nomads.
The second leg will be played in Yerevan on Wednesday, 14 July.
