FFOSTRASOL rose to the occasion as they lifted the Cwpan Coffa Dai ‘Dynamo’ Davies, and in doing so denied Newcastle Emlyn their third trophy of the season, with a 3-2 win at Park Avenue.
The Reds went into the final having already lifted both the Emrys Morgan Cup and Costcutter Ceredigion League Cup, as favourites for a hat-trick of trophies.
It was underdogs Ffostrasol, however, who emerged as deserved winners of the silverware, in a competition that includes teams from north and south Ceredigion.
Having accounted for Aberaeron Reserves, Crannog, Cilgerran and Llandysul, it was a pleasing result for youthful Ffostasol, who included four 16 year-olds and four 17 year-olds within their ranks.
Wanderers opened the scoring when Adam Jones caught out keeper Chris Stevens and fired into the empty net, but the Reds fought back and former Parc Troedrhiw man Dion Phillip floated in a free kick, which found its way into the net.
The Reds played a high line as they pushed for a second goal, but they were caught out with a long ball over the top that sent Jones through for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Stevens to make it 2-1.
With midfielders Iolo Thomas and Alun Bowen and defender Gethin Davies impressing, Ffostrasol were looking solid.
Owain Thomas’ side had to chase the game, and with eight minutes left a Ffostrasol free kick was partially saved, but Alun Bowen reacted sharply to send the rebound into the empty net to make it 3-1
Emlyn added a second goal late on as Dion Phillips was upended and Craig Gordon converted from the spot, but by this stage it was too late and Ffostrasol saw out the game for an historic win.
Skipper Alun Bowen lifted the trophy for the first time in their club’s history, to the delight of their travelling supporters.
