ABERYSTWYTH Town produced a five-star performance to continue their upward trajectory with an eye-catching 5-1 win over Airbus Broughton on Saturday.
Andy Owens gave the hosts an early lead, but the Seasiders were good value for two late goals at the end of the first half by Paulo Mendes and Steve Tomasson, who put the ball into his own net.
A second goal from Mendes, and late efforts from Adam Hughes and Ryan Edwards in the last five minutes capped a superb result for Mathew Bishop’s men.
The game had started in a lively manner, with Joe Phillips’ curling effort from 30 yards being well saved by Lewis Hall.
Owens then pounced on a back pass and belted home a volley from the edge of the area to earn Airbus an early lead.
Back came Aber and Adam Hughes had a shot blocked in the box, before sending in a wonderful ball for the hard-working Tom Price, who couldn’t quite convert.
Mendes narrowly missed a superb cross in from Wes Baynes, and Phillips went on a super run down the wing, before firing inches wide, with Aber looking on top.
Meanwhile Hughes and Lee Jenkins were a super partnership at the back for Aber, restricting the hosts to few chances.
Jordan Evans skipped down the right and flicked a shot just wide, and Owens headed wide from Sam Hart’s in-swinging free kick, with the next goal crucial.
Owens brought a decent save from Connor Roberts, and the Aberystwyth also keeper denied Curtis Strong too - but for the Seasiders Marc Williams forced Hall to claw away a cross, and the home keeper struggled to collect a Baynes cross.
Phillips flashed a shot over from 30 yards, and Price played in Mendes, whose shot was deflected for a corner, with Hall crucially being injured making the save.
Then, three minutes before the interval, main man Mendes headed home the equaliser from Mathew Jones’ corner, and just two minutes later Price’s right wing cross was intercepted into his own net by the unfortunate Steve Tomassen.
Aber had suddenly turned the tables, and although Roberts denied Owens again in injury time, the Seasiders deserved their lead on the balance of play.
Aber started the second half strongly with Jones’ corner being cleared off the line, and Edmilson Vaz played in Phillips, whose header was somehow saved.
Then on 54 minutes the marauding Mendes dived in low to convert Phillips’ curling ball for Aber’s crucial third goal - and there was to be no way back for the battling Wingmakers.
The visitors were controlling play with some lovely passing football, and Phillips forced Hall into a save, before sub Kristian Platt headed wide for the home side.
Phillips had yet another shot saved, and curled an effort wide, before also playing in Williams, who was called offside before converting a low shot goalbound.
At the other end, Jordan Evans flashed a shot wide, Jenkins cleared an effort off the line, and Roberts brought out a great save to deny Hart, but then Evans was forced off the field with a hamstring injury.
When Liam Williams received a second yellow card eight minutes from time for a desperate attempt to slow down Mendes, Airbus were down to just nine men.
Aber took advantage as Hughes headed home Jones’ corner with five minutes to go - and then Ryan Edwards scored an improbable fifth goal with a low volley from distance, which skidded under the stricken Hall to put Aber into dreamland.
