BORTH United made a flying start to their new campaign in the MMP Mid Wales League division two with a solid 5-1 triumph over Brecon Northcote.
Brecon opened up the scoring early on through Curtis Williams, but Borth grew in strength as the game went on and took full control in the second half, with goals from James Davies, Ryan Davies, Guto Huws, Sam Chapman and Clive ‘Djemba’ Morgan.
At a cloudy Uppingham Fields, both teams created some good chances early on, with Borth’s Ryan Davies and Guto Huws seeing their shots saved.
But Brecon then took the lead on the half hour, when Jack Evans weaved his way into the Borth penalty area and his square pass was met by Curtis Williams, to score at the near post.
Borth responded well, and Bryn Oliver’s cross was met by a Dale Lloyd header, only for the goal to then be disallowed for an offside decision.
On the stroke of half-time, however, the impressive Dion Ellis-Clark crossed from the left wing, and James Davies scored with a low shot for the equaliser to make it 1-1 at the interval.
Both teams played an open game as the second half progressed, and Ryan Davies was unlucky to see his snapshot turned away for a corner kick.
Yet, within minutes, Rob Crumpler crossed from the right wing and the alert Ryan Davies headed the ball beyond the goalkeeper for a 2-1 lead.
With the hosts now in the ascendancy Ryan Davies’ pin-point through ball from midfield fell to impressive youngster Guto Huws to score with a low drive, and in the last 10 minutes Sam Chapman scored with a glancing header from a Bryn Oliver corner.
With only minutes of the match remaining Clive Morgan scored with a superb half volley to complete a comprehensive 5-1 win for the home side.
Machynlleth had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at home against Presteigne, who twice came from behind to secure a point with goals from Duane Anning and a last minute screamer from Sam Roberts.
Drew Page and Ben Richards had twice taken the lead for Mach, and Presteigne keeper Fin Ozsoylu had also saved a penalty from Richards.
Dolgellau slipped to 4-1 defeat at home against Newbridge-on-Wye, despite making the perfect start when they went ahead after just two minutes through Dominic Thomas.
Newbridge quickly turned the tables to register a convincing win with two goals from Lyndon Jones and singles from Ollie Woods and Jake Bufton.
To add to Dolgellau’s woes, they were reduced to 10 men as Dave Edwards was sent off for two bookings.
Hay St Mary’s were beaten 5-2 by Four Crosses, after leading 2-1 through Matty Tong and Jack Biggs.
The turning point came in the 40th minute when Hay youngster Callum Maddy was shown a straight red for throwing his marker to the floor after a late challenge on the midfielder.
Crosses took charge with two goals from Ben Simms and singles by Kyle Wilson, Paul Bache and Shin Miah.
Rhayader Town had a battling 1-1 draw with Waterloo Rovers, with Andrew Gwilt netting for the Welshpool side, and Jamie Evans for the Red Kites, now managed by former Aberystwyth Town player Gareth Hughes.
A David Anthony penalty earned Abermule a 1-1 draw with Montgomery on Friday evening, after Rob Hartshorn had opened the scoring.
