BORTH United’s difficult season continued with a 5-1 defeat at Llandrindod Wells, to keep them rooted in the bottom two of the Spar Mid Wales division one last weekend.
Prior to the start of the match both teams and supporters stood for a minute’s silence in memory of Terry Davies, who was a popular contributor to the game.
Llandrindod made the early running at the Broadway, and they made Borth pay for a lapse in defence as early as the fifth minute when Ryan Simms scored with a low shot beyond goalkeeper Sean Gates.
The Spa men kept up their pressure as the opening half progressed, and they doubled their lead on 25 minutes when Kieran Mccarley scored with a cool finish.
Borth responded well and Ryan Davies’ through ball from midfield fell to Ryan Edwards, whose superb shot was brilliantly palmed over by Andy Leonard.
With just minutes of the half remaining, however, Kieran Mccarley scored with a deft finish for a 3-0 lead at the interval.
Llandrindod had secured the three points within 10 minutes of the second half as a break down the left resulted in Ryan Simms converting at the far post.
Borth persevered and when Ryan Edwards was brought down in the penalty area, and he got up to score the spot kick. The Wellmen, however, had the final say as Ben Jones scored late in the half to seal a comprehensive home triumph.
Knighton Town had kicked the Spar Mid Wales League football action off with a 2-0 home success against Aberaeron on Friday evening.
First half goals from Tom James and Sam Williams were the difference as the Robins ended Aberaeron’s recent eight match unbeaten league run.
James opened the scoring after Connor Bird’s strike was parried, and Williams powered home a header from Dan Farmer’s cross.
Knighton had chances to extend their lead after the break while their own back four put in an excellent display and never looked like conceding.
Kerry registered welcome points at Dolforgan Park as goals from brothers Matt and Luke Mumford, and Max Mclaughlin sealed a 3-2 win over Machynlleth. Harry Cottam and Charlie Jellett replied.
Spar Mid Wales League Division Two
TOM Spicer’s injury time leveller earned Aberystwyth University a deserved 2-2 draw tie at home to Dyffryn Banw in the Spar Mid Wales division two.
Despite having the better of the game, the students were trailing, before Spicer pounced three minutes into stoppage time to head in a Dylan Price corner.
Banw had twice led through James Vaughan and Alwyn Jones, but Dan Price notched a fortuitous reply in the second half when his cross drifted into the net.
Newbridge turned in their best performance for some time to net a Spar Mid Wales League second division point in a 1-1 draw at Dolgellau.
The Villagers, now without a win in eight, dominated first half possession and saw Aeron Powell miss a penalty after being taken out.
Dolgellau had a penalty of their own moments later, but Fin Duncan McKaine atoned after the keeper had conceded the spot-kick.
Newbridge took the lead with Ieuan Price and Kyle Morgan combining to free Jake Bufton, whose cross was put away by Ollie Woods.
The visitors again had the lions share of possession after the break, but were unable to add to their tally, and Dominic Thomas levelled when a long ball got past an otherwise water tight Newbridge defence.
Hay St Marys closed in on third placed Aberystwyth University with a convincing 5-0 success at local rivals, Talgarth Town.
The Saints are now three points behind the students with three games in hand, and a third-placed finish would be a good season for Hay, who have had to rebuild following the loss of so many key players in the summer.
Hay got off to the perfect start on Saturday and Jack Biggs headed them in front, before a Talgarth player had even touched the ball.
Darren Horrigan put Tom Landon in for a second goal on 20 minutes and it was three on the hour, with Matty Tong netting from a Biggs pass.
Callum Maddy increased the lead, and Tong missed a penalty following a foul on Jamie Howard, before Biggs finished what he had started with his second of the game late in day.
Llansantffraid Village are the new second division leaders following their 5-0 win at Montgomery Town.
Wayne Austin, Nathan Prodger, Matthew Davies, Rob Carruthers and Tom Gayle netted for Llansantffraid, who are now a point above Builth Wells but have played three games more.
Spar Mid Wales League Cup
LLANIDLOES Town’s pursuit of the Spar Mid Wales League Cup was halted in its tracks with a 3-0 exit to Radnor Valley in the second round at Victoria Avenue.
Second half goals from Liam Jones, Joey Price and Callum Matthews sealed a convincing win for Radnor, to reach the quarter-finals
The Daffs were looking to avenge three earlier defeats to the same opposition this season, and Richie Evans went one on one with keeper Will Fowden early on, but a brilliant last-ditch tackle by 35 year-old Matthew Lloyd thwarted him.
At the other end, Radmor’s Joey Price saw his well-struck free-kick kept out by outstretched hand of keeper Aaron Warwick as the first half ended goalless.
The opening exchanges of the second period saw Llani defender Drew Reynolds blast over, and soon after Matthew Savage fired wide.
On the hour, however, Matthews was brought down on the edge of the box and normal free kick taker Price stepped aside for his cousin Liam Jones to curl his strike into the Llani net.
Five minutes later a surging run by Elliot Morris saw him bearing down on goal, and when home keeper Warwick blocked his attempt on goal, his clearance fell to Joey Price who blasted home from 30 yards out.
Radnor were denied a penalty when Elliot Morris appeared to be pushed over by the home keeper, but on 75 minutes influential midfielder Elliot Morris played a neat one-two with brother Lewis and played in Callum Matthews to fire home the visitors’ crucial third goal.
Steve Morgan also had an effort ruled out for offside as Radnor marched on.
Bow Street played their long-delayed League Cup second round tie at second division side Abermule, and on a challenging pitch, they triumphed 2-1 to qualify again for the quarter finals.
Goals from Tomos Williams and Llion Jenkins sealed victory for the Magpies, after a scrambled goal by Mule’s Stef Rowlands made it 1-1 at the interval.
Berriew edged through 4-3 on penalties after goals by Will Gittins and Jake Mann had earned a 2-2 draw with division two leaders Builth, who scored through Jonny Samuel and Joel Metcalf.
Two goals by Toby Evans steered Llanfair United through with a 5-0 win over Churchstoke, with Josh Astley, Phil Hughes and Ashley Davies also on target.
Peter Rees and Scott Williams scored for Carno as they marched on with a 2-1 win over Llanrhaeadr, with Iwan Matthew replying.
Welshpool’s tie against Brecon Northcote was abandoned due to an injury to the visitors’ Luke Bowen, with the Lilywhites 1-0 up.
