The MMP Mid Wales League division one title race remains tantalisingly poised after Llanidloes Town stayed four points clear at the top by seeing off 10-man Welshpool Town 2-1 at Victoria Avenue.
Connor Bird’s stunning strike secured a crucial victory in their last home game of the season, all the more important as Llani’s three rivals kept up the pressure.
Manager Hugh Clarke praised a disciplined display in front of a sizeable crowd after securing an important win.
“We reacted well to going behind, and showed a lot of discipline,” Clarke said.
“After the early goal, we defended well and had enough chances to have won by more goals, but the main thing was the three points, which keeps us up there. It’s not over yet, and a lot can still happen.”
The Daffs had found themselves trailing after just three minutes when Pool danger man Will Thomas made a break, before crossing for Jack Harris to convert.
The visitors were up for the battle, conceding a string of free kicks, and from one of these Adam Worton crossed into the penalty box, the ball was fumbled and Gareth Owen tapped in the rebound.
Llani had a number of opportunities, with George Clarke being denied on the line, while the visitors were reduced to 10 men before half-time when Dan Bowen was dismissed for his second booking.
The hosts pressed in the second half, but were unable to find a way through, before Bird settled the issue with a rasping 30-yard strike into the top corner.
Caersws remain second in the table after their 3-1 home win against Builth Wells, but they remain four points adrift.
First half goals from Craig Harris and top scorer Mark Edmondson put them on track, but Josh Price replied, before Phil Jones finally made sure of the points.
Llanfair United are five points behind the leaders, but with three games in hand, after they notched up a solid 3-1 victory at home against Radnor Valley.
Josh Astley sealed the win with a great low strike from long range, after Gethin Stephens and Karl Seliaerts had cancelled out Jack Williams’ opener for the visitors.
Berriew remain a further point adrift of the leaders, with two games in hand, following their 4-3 success at Aberaeron.
Goals from Bailee James Austin, George Mitten, Charlie Humphreys and Joe Haycock opened up a 4-1 lead in the second half, but Aberaeron fought back to set up a nervy finish, with goals from Gareth Severs, Elwyn Edwards and Ifan Burrell.
Bow Street picked up a good point on the road after a few weeks off, as Tom Williams’ goal earned a 1-1 draw at Kerry, who scored through Luke Mumford.
A Richie Evans penalty earned Carno a 1-0 win over Llandrindod Wells, whilst Tywyn/Bryncrug grabbed a last minute winner to win 2-1 at Churchstoke, with goals by Nick Williams and Aston Heath.In midweek, Carno were held to a goalless draw at Llandrindod Wells.
