THE goals poured in as Aberystwyth Town slipped to their second defeat in a week, to leave high-flying Bangor City singing in the rain after a solid 4-0 home win.
Eager to bounce back from their midweek defeat at Rhyl, the Seasiders made the early running with Ricky Watts sending over a cross from the right which dropped just past Connor Roberts’ far post.
Standing water on the pitch hampered Aber’s attempts to play progressive football, although the prominent Chris Jones sent a free kick wide from the edge of the box.
City, however, took the lead on nine minutes when they won a free-kick on the edge of the box and Gary Roberts struck into the top corner, despite the best efforts of Aber goalkeeper Dom Richards.
Matthew Bishop’s men continued to attack, with Luke Borrelli a threat down the right, though Sam Rodon was called on to deny Alex Boss with a crucial sliding tackle.
Luke Sherbon tested Roberts’ handiwork with a long distance pile-driver, and Blake Davies knocked home the rebound, only to be denied by an offside flag.
Joe Clarke then sent over a promising cross which nestled onto the roof of the net, but it wasn’t happening for Aber in the final third.
Richards parried another free kick from Roberts to safety, but in the 32nd minute Jamie Reed was released down the left channel and he chipped the keeper with a fine finish to double Bangor’s lead.
Connor Roberts almost gifted Aber a response by fumbling Borrelli’s cross into the path of Davies, but the Forest Green loanee’s strike went wide under pressure.
Jonathan Evans had a shot saved, and Chis Jones went on a weaving run, but his shot also missed, and any hopes Aber had of a comeback were dashed in the 49th minute.
A free-kick from Henry Jones dropped to Leon Clowes, who picked out Sion Edwards to drive the ball home from six yards out
Sherbon cleared Danny Gossett’s effort off the line and Richards did well to deny Aberaeron-based Jones, but at the other end Sherbon and Evans also had half chances.
Sherbon then curled a shot wide, but in doing so injured his groin and had to be carried off the pitch.
Seven minutes before the end it was all over as Henry Jones was tripped in the box, and Gary Roberts fired home from the spot.
Midfielder Clarke limped off, leaving Aber down to 10 men, and Rodon needed to block Oscar Durnin’s effort.
Visiting keeper Richards also pulled off an excellent save to deny ex-Seasider Reed a second goal in the closing stages as Bangor finished on top.
