Newtown 0 v Aberystwyth Town 4
FULL TIME
ABERYSTWYTH brought the curtain down on their season in fine style with a convincing 4-0 win at Latham Park to take the bragging rights in the Mid Wales derby.
The Seasiders were worthy winners and should probably have scored a few more goals against an under strength Newtown outfit who had already secured a playoff place.
The opening exchanges were evenly contested with Jonathan Evans’ flicked header forcing home keeper Khamran Steventon into action while, at the other end, Louis Bradford pulled off a last ditch challenge to divert the ball out for a corner.
Good play by Evans down the left flank on 17 minutes allowed him to put a teasing cross into the box but no one was able to get a telling touch.
The visitors were shaping up as the better outfit and made the breakthrough on 22 minutes, Mathew Jones sending the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.
The Black and Greens continued to bomb forward and only the woodwork denied them on the half hour, Evans breaking through but his chip hit the bar.
And he went close again a couple of minutes later with a deft header which landed on the roof of the net.
Aber started the second half as they finished the first, on the front foot with Harry Franklin forcing Steventon into a fine save but the young keeper was beaten again moments later, danger man Evans, with a deserved goal, beating the offside trap to dink the ball into the bottom corner.
And they were soon 3-0 up, in-form Owain Jones capitalising on a defensive to slot the ball into the bottom corner.
The visitors were hungry for more goals, and only a great stop from Steventon stopped Jones from getting his second after fantastic play by Evans down the right.
Aber keeper Connor Roberts was called into action to make a rare save to keep out Nick Rushton’s low drive while Jamie Veale curled a shot over from distance at the other end.
Callum Roberts struck the bar for Newtown as the hosts tried to find a way back into it but Aber kept their foot on the gas.
Jones broke clear one on one but the keeper saved well with his feet.
The visitors kept looking to add to their tally and goal number four arrived on 84 minutes, and it was the best of the bunch, a stunning outside of the foot pass from Veale setting up Bradford to cross for Franklin to squeeze the ball home from a narrow angle.
