GEOFF Kellaway’s brilliant low strike earned Aberystwyth Town a huge three points away to Airbus UK Broughton, and their first win of the season was no less than they deserved for a superb defensive performance.

Manager Matthew Bishop brought new signing Blake Davies straight into the starting eleven, with Ricky Watts and Chris Jones both also being promoted from the bench last week.

With Aber’s orange kits resplendent in the North Wales sunshine, the visitors started to control possession and create chances after a cagey start.

Aber’s Ricky Watts earned a corner with an overlapping run, and from the resultant kick club captain Luke Sherbon saw a volleyed shot cleared off the goal-line by Matt McGinn.

Impressive left back Ryan Wollacott made a great block to deny Airbus’ ever-threatening Tony Gray, and then Luke Borelli saw a low shot saved.

Davies appeared to be bundled over in the box, but no penalty was given, and then Aber had a let off back at the other end when Gray hit the post with a low volley, following a corner kick.

From this point on, Bishop’s men dominated, and after Borrelli had volleyed a deflected effort over the crossbar, the key moment in a game of few chances came in the 32nd minute.

Joe Clarke, bossing the midfield along with Sherbon, played Kellaway in with a class ball from deep and Town’s right winger made no mistake with a low volley, which nestled into the bottom corner of the net.

Watts was denied a shot by a late tackle, and another pearler of a ball from Clarke found Borrelli, but the chance never came, and Aberystwyth were rewarded for a composed first half with a 1-0 lead at the break.

Aber started the second half well and Davies might have wrapped the game up, had home keeper Ryan Neild not made a brilliant low stop to deny the striker, who had done so well to find space down the middle.

The former Forest Green Rovers striker then brought another save from keeper Neild, after making an aggressive run to get his strike away.

Airbus did see a lot of the ball in the second half, but Aber’s defenders came into their own, and with Sam Rodon imperious in the air, and his centre back colleague Will Bell looking a class act, the hosts failed to trouble Aber’s goal until injury time.

Sub Ryan Fraughan sent in a ball which Tony Gray brought down before volleying high over the bar - but on the break Aber were still a threat and Watts set up Kellaway who struck the bar with a left footed volley.

Substitutes Lewis Coyle and Kurtis March replaced the hard-working Davies and Chris Jones up front, and Coyle just failed to connect with another great delivery from Borrelli.

In injury time, however, Fraughan saw an effort bounce off the crossbar, and Jonny Spittle’s follow-up shot was cleared off the line by Wollacott

Gray then pulled off a an astounding 93rd minute tip-over save from keeper Dominic Richards for the save of the weekend - as Aber held firm for an excellent win on their travels.
