THE WOODWORK twice denied Aberystwyth Town their second win on the new 3G pitch at Park Avenue, but a draw was a fair reflection of the game after Matthew Bishop’s side had rode their luck in the opening half.
Luke Sherbon’s header crashed against the bar in the second half, and substitute Will Bell also saw his strike tipped onto the bar by keeper Dave Roberts - but the visitors were to also rue missed chances.
It was former manager Alan Morgan’s side who had started brightest, and in the opening minutes Lewis Buckley got behind defender Sam Rodon, only to see his lobbed effort go just wide of the far post.
Llandudno kept up their early pressure and good work down the left side saw James Joyce provide a deep cross towards Gareth Evans, whose header forced an acrobatic save from Aber keeper Chris Mullock, who managed to tip the ball over.
Aber were looking shaky at this stage and then on 17 minutes Evans was played in by a trademark Danny Hughes through ball, but keeper Mullock again came to the rescue as he got down well to deny him.
Hughes was the play-maker again for the visitors 10 minutes before half-time, as he picked out John Owen, who had made a good run through the middle, only for some great defending from Ryan Wollacott to stop him getting his shot away.
At the other end, Chris Jones was the brightest spark for the hosts, down the left flank, and their best spell of possession saw Luke Borrelli’s left-footed volley collected by ex-Aber keeper Dave Roberts.
In a game of contrasting halves, it was Aber who stepped things up after the interval, and they came closest to breaking the deadlock when a Chris Jones free kick was met by a brave diving header by captain Sherbon, with the ball crashing against the crossbar, before being cleared.
Further home pressure saw a corner from Jones being headed back across goal by Wollacott, and Kellaway did well to get his volley away, only to fly just wide.
Llandudno remained a threat on the counter-attack, however, and a great ball over the top from Tom Dix found livewire Buckley, who stayed onside, only to fire just wide of the near post when in on goal.
Both sets of midfielders began to cancel each other out, although Aber’s Kurtis March linked up well with Jones, who saw his shot stopped by keeper Roberts.
At the other end, Joyce’s free kick to the back post found a towering Mike Williams, whose header failed to connect.
Aber again responded with Borrelli firing wide on the turn, and then when Will Bell came off the bench to replace Sherbon, he almost made an immediate impact.
With three minutes to go, a long throw into the penalty box by Jones found its way to Bell, and his well-directed shot looked destined for the top corner of the net, only for Roberts to pull off a brilliant finger-tip save to tip it onto the crossbar.
