ABERYSTWYTH Town showed real fighting spirit as they battled through atrocious playing conditions to end a run of four successive home defeats with a win against Port Talbot on Friday night.
A 78th minute header from Rhys Griffiths against his former club was enough to secure much-needed points as Aber finally got their campaign on track.
Seven-times winner of the Welsh Premier Golden Boot award, Griffiths expressed his team’s relief at what was a very committed win in the constant rain.
“It has been a tough few weeks for us, but we’ve tried to stick together,” the 35 year-old striker told atfc.org.uk. “We needed to get the win today, and we have managed to do that."It was a 50-50 game really in the conditions, which meant that whoever scored the goal was going to win this match.
“It was a great ball in from Craig Williams and I was a yard away from my man. I managed to head it down, and it went in. It was all about the cross really, and if we cross balls in, we score goals.
“It was vital for us to end that run of losses, and to get some confidence back.
“The pitch was a real leveller, and it was about working hard and slogging out the win. It was a tough game physically, but after a rest the boys will train hard and hopefully we can come back and win away against Rhyl in a couple of weeks.” Read the full match report and reaction in this week's Aberystwyth edition
