PORTHMADOG scoring ace Asa Hamilton netted two stunning goals in the opening stages to set up a welcome 2-1 home win over Conwy Borough to ease any possible Cymru Alliance relegation concerns.

Hamilton, who was signed by manager Craig Papirnyk from Rhayader Town last month and scored his first goal for the club at Guilsfield in a 3-2 defeat on October 17, was quick off the mark with his double at the Traeth.

Just two minutes had gone, when Conwy’s hesitant defender Jamie Whitehouse lost possession of the ball to Porthmadog’s Julian Williams just outside the box.

Williams then put Hamilton clear for the striker to slickly turn his marker and despatch a clinical 15-yarder past Boro’s Louis Mackin.

Hamilton pounced again on 16 minutes, in a follow-up to a big goal-kick from Richard Harvey that was headed forward by Stuart Rogers, and again Conwy’s Whitehouse erred with a snatched clearance straight to Porthmadog’s scorer.

Conwy, who are fifth from bottom, clawed back into contention with Moses Barnett’s reply on 57 minutes, having chased Ricky Evans’s header and Jack Roberts’s pass to steer a shot beyond Harvey inside the far post.

At most stages of an absorbing match, Porthmadog looked steady and created several promising chances.

Iwan Lewis had a shot blocked by Mackin, Griff John Williams headed over and Julian Williams dragged the ball in front of the target.

Harvey earned his spurs with a breathtaking save on 20 minutes, when Barnett’s free-kick into the box was met by a point-blank shot from Evans, and the stopper’s reaction was superb.

With the points in the balance, as the game entered its closing quarter, Porthmadog should have stretched the gap between the sides, when Hamilton despatched a glorious 25-yarder that agonisingly grazed the cross bar.

Eilir Edwards also made space to produce an angled 15-yarder that was smothered by the diving Mackin at the post, but Conwy, desperate to redeem themselves, imposed heavy late pressure, albeit without creating any major clear-cut chances.
