Aberystwyth Town 1 Newtown 2

ABERYSTWYTH’S unbeaten run at Park Avenue since the JD Cymru Premier restart was ended in the cruellest of fashions when they were beaten by a very late sucker punch last night.

Gavin Allen’s resurgent Seasiders were ahead up to the 74th minute and looking good for another three points at home after Marc Williams put them ahead on the stroke of half time.

But the Robins drew level when Tyrone Ofori rolled the ball into the bottom corner following a corner.

The breakthrough lifted the visitors, who had controlled long periods of the contest and they pushed for the winner.

Credit to Aber, they demonstrated just how resolute they have been recently and looked like they might hold on for a share of the spoils with the Lee Jenkins-led defence holding firm.

But the pressure finally told in the third and final minute of stoppage time when defender Jordan Evans netted the winner.

With Connor Roberts and Jamie Veale suspended, Marc Williams returned from suspension and young keeper Alex Pennock made the starting eleven, with striker Dan Cockerline returning from injury to make his first matchday squad.

The visitors created the first meaningful chances with ex-Seasider Ryan Edwards’ shot blocked, James Davies denied by a Jenkins tackle and Pennock called into action to make a decent save.

At the other end, Jonathan Evans made strides upfield to test the Robins keeper but his shot was blocked and collected.

No team was able to get a strong hold of the game so far with the ball spending a fair time in the air.

The best chance came on the half hour when Nick Rushton headed wide from a good position.

A warning from the visitors but they fell behind on 41 minutes.

A delicious corner from Matty Jones found marauding skipper Marc Williams who flicked an effort to the far corner.

Aberystwyth will look to bounce back when they visit Haverfordwest County on Tuesday night.
